Uncle Charlie's Fury

The engine itself probably is no Police exclusive. The 1972 Plymouth Data Book lists a 280 net horsepower 440-4bbl with dual snorkel air cleaner as an option for the Road Runner (only). Biggest one listed there for the Fury is a 230 horsepower 440 with dual-snorkel air cleaner. On another page, the very same book lists a 440-4bbl (no horsepower stated) with single snorkel as the biggest engine available for the Fury. The respective page from the 1972 Plymouth Police brochure mentions a 285 horsepower 440-4bbl. for the Fury.

Sort of like the way Chevrolet sold the L-88 package in the Corvette? It was available if you knew to ask, but they didn't directly tell you?

This is the same air cleaner that I have on my 1972 WSP Polara. I don't know why or when Mopar implemented this change. Air cleaner 007.jpgAir cleaner 008.jpgAir cleaner 009.jpg

The air cleaner incongruity is pissing me off. Why did the factory give him a single snorkel?

Here's my guess: The dual snorkel is louder than a single-snorkel air cleaner. On a "Performance" car, the buyers like some intake honk. For cops driving day in and day out it's just noise that adds fatigue. With the vacuum-operated trap door, you get the performance when you don't care about noise, and the quiet when you don't.

Edited to add: Which tells me one of these would be awesome for the Imperial to go with my other mods (when the time comes).

AFAIK, in 1970 and 1971 on the dual snorkel air cleaner, the passenger side snorkel had a vacuum-operated door that was not connected to the temperature-sensing valve, but instead was directly conncted to the vacuum. So the door in the second snorkel was always closed unless the engine ran at WOT at which time the vacuum dropped, until one stepped off the accelerator again.

I saw this thread and immediately thought about the TV show "My Three Sons" with Uncle Charley. But then I remembered they drove Pontiacs.

I was working in the fuel systems lab at Chrysler in 1972 when that "dumper door" air cleaner was introduced. I was told it actually flowed better than the dual snorkel, hence the use in the relatively high output police engines. And the police cars had to be competitive in that market since the police trials every year sorted out the best performers graded in a variety of areas.

Sure is cool that people that were in the thick of things at Chrysler are posting on FCBO. Fascinating stuff.

Yeah, a multi Thank button or a bigger thanks button would help here....

Thanks just the same

Wow.
This is arguably at or near of the top of the list of most valuable Fuselage.
Honored that you chose FCBO.

I am surprised at the single snorkel air cleaner.

Honored to be here. Its like family, detmatt's avatar reminds me of my brother and cancritter's avatar reminds me of my mother in law.

In the order sheet, where you can choose the engine, the dealer or Uncle Charlie wrote "see attached note". I guess that note was it what caught the district sales representative's attention.

It looks like Uncle Charlie's Fury is up for grabs by what I saw on https://www.facebook.com/groups/360213417369617/?fref=nf

ok....... I showed my brother all the interest there was in that black tie bat mobile, what we named it, we knew it was a rare and unusual car, but never dreamed this much interest. so.......risking blowing up my email, he said "we will entertain all offers" so there ya have it.
