Gentlemen,
Needles and jets came in... Late Saturday.
Pulled the thermoquad and gave it the commando treatment..
Original jets are .101. Left needle was a little bent. Tiny bit. Hence the wear I mentioned before.
Checked the jets and left one was a little loose. But when I went to remove it for the swap, base threaded insert was loose in the base. Looks like that was the problem or at least part of it. Finished removing it and set it back in with epoxy.
Went with the .097 jet as this car weighs in a bit more than most....
Replaced the needles with the original sized replacement... Numbers were same but micrometer dim were not the same. The ones that came out were as much as a mil smaller.... In the power tip.
Ran a drill bit the same size as the idle circuit and the right one must have had a burr because it took a few tries before it went in and out smooth.. Left side was smooth as a whistle after first pass. Looks to be someone may have over torqued the idle screw in too far on the right and closed the orifice a bit but now they're equal. I bought new screws to replace the originals. The new ones were a little sharper at the points.
Put it all back together with a new zip kit and SHAZAM! Perfect idle at 650 rpm. Smooth as can be.
Ran it a bit after warm up with a few energetic stomps.... No bog and plenty of power. Hopefully I can keep my foot out of it and realize something better than 8 mpg.
Really too any changes in one shot to say what it was but I figure it was the left jet base and needles.
Still need to check the #1 plug for carbon but my scientific nose tells me that the exhaust smells leaner.
Thanks for all your advice....
