Vinyl Top Material...where?

Hey 361, just ignore my posts. I don't care for your attitude.

I come here to get the advice of other C-body owners, so I might use their knowledge to expediently solve problems I'm having as I restore my car. At my age, I don't need somebody scolding me for not first doing a thorough internet search....because guess what, I already did that, and now I'm coming to the forum for help, not scorn or ridicule (did you see my post about my carpet?). So far all of your responses to my questions haven't yielded any useful information, just you telling me that I should google it. Yeah....I didn't think of that. And that kind of useless information just doesn't SUIT me.

Hello gents, I am looking for a source for vinyl top material for my 67 Newport custom. I have not had good luck with SMS (they don't answer their phone), so if there are other options out there, I'd like to hear about them. Cheers and thanks as always from Tampa, Rich

Are you getting a shop to do the install??
I would advise to remove the trim yourself to keep labour costs down.
The molding that wraps around the C pillar and meets the dutchman panel may have to be unbolted from inside...not an easy task.
The badge on the C pillar you need to remove the inside cover and unbolt it too.
Hope this helps

Due to the Corona Virus, Legendary Interiors has been pretty much on a lock down. I spoke to them approximately two weeks ago concerning an order and they were hoping to be optimistically back in production by May 18th. Even then, due to state mandates, I am sure that they will possibly be at 25% staffing as they operate under the New York mandates. They are basically working remotely taking and processing orders to my understanding.

Like most businesses, many of these operations have been drastically impacted. Even once they come back, the number of orders to process will have them working like crazy to even get close to being caught back up.

Thanks C-Barge for the always- helpful info. Honestly, it was the removal of the chrome mouldings that I was nervous about. I successfully replaced a convertible top on my MGB, and I replaced the headliner in my '63 Riviera, and have done several carpet installations successfully. Sure, the massive vinyl piece looks pretty daunting, but the guy wants $800 to do it, and that's if I do the roof repair. And, it ain't rocket science, right? SO, next question.....where is the dutchman panel?? Never heard that nomenclature! And if you can offer any tricks of the trade in removing the mouldings, I'd love to know.

Thanks again C-Barge,

Rich

(Here's a shot of the Riviera headliner, which I swear caused a pinched nerve in my neck that persists a year later. But now I can cross "headliner" off my bucket list).

The dutchmans panel is where the rear vent is .. below the rear window.
Front window trim..start at the bottom work your way up.
Drip rails...start at bottom of A pillar and work your way up and back.
The trim that holds the side weather strip needs to come out too, Gently pull the weather strip out not to tear it.It can be reglued back in.
Once the weatherstrip is out remove the screws that hold the trim.
Rear window..start at the top work your way down.
With the trim all of it is best to clean and polish it all. Worth the extra effort and will look awsesome with a fresh top.
Hope this helps

My current plan is to (...) replace the vinyl top (and have the metal underneath painted for good protection) at the same time -- the original was replaced by a previous owner and currently does not "need" to be done, so I might as well do things properly.

I have searched the forum but not found information on the name of the Polara/Monaco vinyl grain in '71. The only thread I have found dates back to 2013 and does not mention the material name. As there were several grains in '70 (e.g., gator), I wonder. Medina's broadcast sheet simply says V1W.

Legendary has a single choice: white boar grain. (...)
Dante's sells a boar-grain top like Legendary. Said to be the "correct boar grain (...) available in black, white, (and) dark green. Each top is (...) manufactured to original specifications with the correct 100% cotton drill backing."

Based on this post by @saforwardlook I would think that boar grain is correct.

--> has anyone ordered a top from either place for a 1971 Polara or Monaco? @saforwardlook @amazinblue82 or @bigmoparjeff perhaps?

PS: prices are up to $487 at Legendary (+$39 S&H) and $490 at Dante's. And, there is no coupon anymore. Ouch.

I won't be of any help on this subject.

I haven't done any vinyl tops yet. I do plan to tackle one in the hopefully not too distant future when it's time to get one of my '73 Gran Coupes ready to sell. That car will require the same top that has been causing so many headaches with the '72-'73 Chryslers.

Thanks for the reply! I was the lucky one who got the right top in just two months for Buttercup, my 1972 NYB. No one but SMS makes that top, so I would get in early. Note also that my installer said he'd never seen a top so closely measured -- it was right, but barely. @david hill has more info, as he saw the car when the installer was doing the job.
