Whereas that may be true it doesn't solve the problem of needing a voltage regulator that may be virtually imposable to find.
It would be interesting to know why the Imperial in 69 had this particular setup.
Personally I'd guess it was an "advanced" design and they found a simpler way to do it later.
The 69 had an isolated field and the later ones had an insulated field. I'm not sure of the differences but that is what my research turned up.
In light of finding the correct unit there is a relatively easy fix.
