Whats up guys
i acquired a 64 newport and i have done a lot of reading with no answer. i have the 361 with strumberg 2 barrel intake and i would like to upgrade to a 4 barrel and my FIL has factory 4 barrel intakes just what carbs fit factory intakes?

next what is the difference in intake flanges. i keep seeing square bore but what other ones is there and what ones are compatible?

i know i am going to go with about a 600 cfm carb to wake her up, but what carbs and intaked?

thanks

I have found over the years that Edelbrock makes as good an intake as anyone out there. My first choice for availability in most engine sizes and configurations. Dual plane will do just fine for the size carb you want to use. Their carbs, on the other hand come into question as far as I'm concerned. I've purchased a few in my time and find that they have quirks that I've never been able to resolve like cold idle, poor hot idle, percolation, idle mixture issues and linkage. I also don't like the banjo fitting for fuel input to the carb.I would recommend Holley in your case and you don't have to pay a lot of money to get a good one. If you can get one, a Carter is a basic carb that seems to do all thing well. In either case an electric choke is the best way to go.

I have a holley 670 street avenger with vacuum secondaries, i can recommend that carb even tho it took some tuning and wasnt quite right out of the box (transition waaaay too lean and power valve restrictors waaäy to big). My mileage improved over the carter afb (which is what the edelbrock is). I just wish i had put a bit more money down and bought the quickfuel ss, way more tuning ability.

What yatzee says about the carbs is absolutely true, thats why i switched to a holley

I will answer your question about Square bore and Spread bore first. A square bore manifold has all four venturi holes in a square pattern and most times are the same size, (Primary and secondary). Most Edelbrock and smaller Holley carbs use this pattern. A Spread bore has way larger holes for the secondary venturi. Example Carter Thermoquad, Rodchester Quadrajet.
Whatever way you chose the carb and manifold pattern must be the same, also use the throttle adapter as aftermarket carbs use the generic G.M. pattern. This way your kickdown linkage will work. You can also get new fuel lines from Inline tube cheap. Good Luck.

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous reply, If you live in a area that has a cold climate, and want to drive the car, get an Intake manifold that has a Heat Riser Passage cast into it. This will help atomize the fuel and most dual plane manifolds have it cast in.

If your FIL (father in law?) has some stock intakes, you can't go wrong with one of those. Aftermarket intakes are great... but I'd use what you already have.

As suggested, Edelbrock 600 CFM carb with vacuum secondaries and electric choke. That's a "square bore" type carb. A manifold from a 361 or 383 will fit. One from a 400 will also fit, but then (most likely) you will have the "spread bore" pattern for a Thermoquad carb. 413, 426 (wedge) and 440 will not fit.

Use the latest stock intake you can get, from a 400 would be best, they have the largest plenum volume. A eddy carb will bolt up to a speadbore carb flange they have a dual bolt pattern.

Yeah a 750 or 800 may hit on the primary side but a 600 clears almost all. Worst case you buy a $20 adapter.
