What Engine is in my Boat?

I realize this is a car site, but could use some help ID’ing this engine.
I’ve looked up countless Google searches but I admit I’m a little confused. I was told it’s a 383, but searches say the Pad is 413/440 but then I see something about a 383 RB(can’t seem to find the info on exactly what that is).
What I’m trying to figure out is what I have, so I can get a new starter as I believe the current one is going bad. I appreciate any information you all may be able to give me. Hopefully pictures will load.

The 3505s carburetors are ‘63-‘64 AFB’s. They came on the Chrysler “Letter” cars, the 300J & 300K model. The block cast number applied to the 413 block. Nice setup with the long ram intake manifolds.

WHY are the air filters pointed towards the rear.....?

With them pointed rearward the venturi effect is sucking air OUT of them at any speed
unless there is a cover / box on top of motor creating positive air pressure inside the box.....

Cool, Thank You. Previous owner said it was a 383, I’m trying to figure out what starter to get. Is there a difference between a 383 and a 413 starter?
There are numbers stamped in the nose housing G1889477, but there’s crayon written Chry#18889200(wondering if prior owner got something out of a junkyard?).
When trying to start, it seems there’s a lot of “grinding” and it pulls the engine down, doesn’t spin freely as I would expect.
When it started and ran, everything sounds normal. Starter gear doesn’t show any signs of wear, so I’m thinking, relay/bendix going out. Thank You again.

The reason filters are backwards typically is in a boat, is if you catch a wave deep on the bow and water comes over or just basic running and splash off the sides the engine doesn’t inhale water. Not the best for performance, but better than hydro locking an engine.

The big block starters will fit whether it is an RB or B engine. Chrysler did make an RB 383 in 59 and 60. Looks like you have a 413. I agree and I would turn the air filters around. Nice boat.

1962 Rayson Craft Hull. Old School Hot Rod. I Race Boats as a hobby, but this is just an Old School Cool Cruiser. Race Boat is Beismeyer flat Vdrive.

Edit: I thought from earlier posts that the boat, engine, starter were 1962. Because the starter is earlier, I deleted the rest of the post because starter is prior to Chrysler gear reduction.

No difference between 413 and 383 big block starter.
I think that your starter is junk, but you could get a rebuilder to look at it.
I have used 1991 to 1999 Mitsubishi small block starter with great success on a big block. I usually search 1994 dodge ram 5.2 5.9 starter. The Mitsubishi came stock on Chrysler Magnum V8 trucks. It has more torque and spins the engine quicker than the Chrysler starter. You can buy them relatively cheap on ebay.

member Badvert65 has a nice wiring adapter to make these work with a vintage wiring harness.

Take that starter to a local rebuild shop and have it repaired. Tell them it is for a 1959-1961 Chrysler 413.

or get a new one here. story goes it needs to be ground on some to fit In a car, don’t know about the boat.

Older Chrysler Dodge High Torque Mini Starter

Those are 63-64 short ram intakes. Maybe not the best for a boat that sees constant high RPM.

What does it have stamped on the front pad circled in the photo?

A RB 383 will. Raised block 383 were available in 1959/60.

I doubt that starter has anything at all to do with anything Chrysler. It will be dedicated to whatever brand marine setup is bolted to that engine.

They supply the flywheel and housing which is what the starter has to fit.

Didn't Chrysler marine engines turn backwards as well? I guess we don't know if this was an original Marine engine or customized. I don't recall how Chrysler labeled their marine engines that turned backwards.

That looks like the starter used in some stick hemi cars in the sixties. Also used in some early slant 6 stick cars.

If that were mine, I'd have that starter rebuilt. Yea, not as efficient as those girly starters they sell now, but the sound of that gear reduction starter is unmistakable and IMHO, would make the boat sound like it did when starting back when it was new.
