What is the function of this cylinder with a spring in it, in the bucket seat on the passengers site of an imperial 1971 2 door.

It has a lever, when you pull it apparently nothing happens?

Can somebody enlighten me?

Looks like it might be a mis-placed/hidden rh seat recliner spring mechanism? The actual recliner pivot mechanism would be at the base of the seat back, with the spring mechanism giving it the motion so it didn't flop backward uncontrollably when the recliner was adjusted.

Obviously, it's probably been there from Day 1?

Just some thoughts,

From my '70 FSM (I don't have a digital '71). This should be close enough, but look in your '71 Factory Service Manual for more.

I don't know... It's worth a look.

@jet1969 You can get a copy of the parts manual at MyMopar No '71 service manual though.
Thanks, I have the manual but I still can not figure out what the function is when you push the lever down. It pushes / compresses the spring in the cylinder 1-2 mm.
Does it help to release the upperpart leaning forward? Or getting it back in position and click for safety?

It can be shimmed for adjustment don’t know why.

It allows the upper seat back to recline so the passenger can lay back.
