I'm far from a world traveler, been to Europe twice (Paris, Turin, Pompei), I want to travel more, maybe when I retire next year.

For me when I see a picture of a cool place I might like to visit I try to find it and put a pin on the map.

Long before the internet I was addicted to old highways and their evolution. Seeing old pictures made me want to know what it was like now, at first it was the easy/obvious ones then somewhere along that transitioned into location hunting. My trip to Turin was all about this, I had already located every location from the movie The Italian Job (1969) and felt that if I ever had the opportunity to see them in person I would.

Lived in Paris four years for work. Been to Torino a dozen times for work, but never got ahy sightseeing in. Pompei/Herculaneum .... fascinating yet very sad. Those poor folks didnt know what hit them. :(

Retirement does loom for me as welll. I will see more of America in my bus, hopefully I can drive those Detroit beasts well into my seventies.

Just a few things left internationally .. back to London, back to Rome, and my daughter wants to drag me (and a lady friend) with her and hubbyy on a Viking tour of the Danube.

I'm pissing and moaning about it, but I do wanna go back to Budapest :poke:

My wife and I did the Romantic Danube Viking river cruise last September. It was amazing! Prague is a beautiful city!
 
My mom also did the Danube river cruise and LOVED IT!

Someday I will make it to Europe…. But paying for college for the kids for the next decade will take persistence. :-(

This one appears to have run its course.

The background building is Sacré-Cœur in Paris. It in on Montmartre (a hill in the City, in use for centuries), in an area of the same name. The exact area in/on Montmarte is Place_du_Tertre.

This stucture, and the Montmarte area, should be considered for one's "short list" of an inexpensive walking tour or a city filled with stuff to see. Much of what Paris has to offer represented in this relatively small area.

Still a bit of hike (like five miles) to walk to the Eiffel Tower. Consider grabbing an Uber, but it would be a wonderful trek if you had time/felt like it for a good look at the north side of the Seine. :)

Sacré-Cœur looks old, but its "only" about 150 years old. B&W pic below is 1882 under construction. You can see the elevation of Montmarte.

As mentioned I was there with my niece in 2019, we had just been by the Basilica and were heading down the hill to Moulin Rouge.

Same plaza just off to the left.

lotta cool things going that way .. down the hill.

shopping, art, food (I never got used to the outdoor seating .. but hey, its Paris. Everybody does it!) and the most beautiful brick streets.
 
Two-fer Tuesday. Here we have a pair of Marilyn's not Marilyn's pair.

First up is a frame from one of her most iconic roles. Although I have seen this film her popularity is a little before my time. The image search did point me in the right direction but if you know the film you know where to start.

Next is a candid that I didn't initially see as Marilyn. This one is more of a given, taken while in town shooting another one of her more iconic roles.

Knowing nothing of the the movie Niagara (1953) I first flew over the USA Niagara and quickly realized it must be in Canada. At that point I landed at the Victoria Park Restaurant, it was a stone building but nothing like the one in the picture. I quickly learned it wasn't a new building and started looking more.

In Googling the picture there were other screen grabs from the this scene from the movie, one of them was Marilyn's famous walk said to be the longest walk in film history at 116 feet. In one of those pictures you can see a bridge in the background. Not obvious in the picture but I assumed it was the same scene.

I then cruised up the road till I could make the view work. at that location was a building that at a glance looked nothing like what was in the movie.

In looking into that building (to see if it may have been replaced). I then found a picture of a building that matched the movie.

I looked back at Google Earth and could see that the original building has been absorbed into the one that is there now.

I had hopes of finding elements of the original facade but nothing but parts of the turrets and upper level windows.

The next one was taken in Reno while on location of The Misfits (1961). Like I had mentioned it was pretty straight forward. Again not knowing the movie with the street signs this just said Reno to me, sure enough there was an intersection of these two streets, but was it this intersection? In looking at the movie information I now figured it must be Reno but for me that was not enough (people on the internet said it was Reno and they are always right).

This view just didn't look right, close but no cigar. The building in the foreground is different (or a major facelift).

The next building back looked right, but the perspective was off, a lot.

Looking at a 1967 Topo I could see that the street alignments were different making the crosswalk that she is on part of a tee intersection.

This realignment happened about 1966/67, not too long after production. Ok maybe not a big difference (45-50').
