I wonder why Chrysler never offered the 340 in C-bodies?

Probably b/c the engineering people at the time did not think it was cost effective at the time as the three forty was reserved for smaller cars with less weight, and there was already the three eighteen as an option, not that it was advertised as an HP engine.

The 318 was standard in most, the 340 waa a performance engine, c bodies werent viewed as performance cars. By 1970 they knew the 360 was gonna be an option in the C.

but not as a performance option; more like bread and butter grocery getter option.

The 340 engine (in stock form) would have been a sorry mismatch for the large c body cars. I had one in a Duster. Great for the little Duster, high rev's were the norm.....you could string that bad boy out forever.
But could you image a 340 in a 69' New Yorker or Imp? Ya, there's your answer why it wasn't done.

I had a 340 from a duster in a 71polara, i'm talking from experience, it moved and pulled hard. When you've done it then tell us your findings

With some performance upgrades, I was beating stock 440 cars at Union Grove Dragway, Wisconsin on the weekends.

Any performance in there?
Why not a 340?

Sure thing.
I could take a 225/6 valiant, throw a nos bottle in the trunk and beat stock 440 cars as long as the bottle held out.

The notion that a 340 shouldnt be in a C over a 383 is silly and closed minded.

I just don't know HOW Chrysler got along without you heading up their engineering/production activities in those days. Its a miracle they got as far as they did without throwing 340 motors in Polaras, I mean who would have thought???

The way Chrysler was going we should be greatfull a diesel /6 didn't become standard by ''78.

Just think of how much more money they could have made!! Maybe they wouldn't have needed the original Iacocca bailout.
