Vintage NASCAR

Didja know that Bobby, Harry, and a couple others on the K&K team were given Rolex "President" watches just for running the 1st Talladega when Richard and about everyone else in NASCAR boycotted the race because of the condition of the track surface being ah long way from flat 'n Smooth. BTW, The backs of all those watches were engraved "WINNERS NEVER QUIT, QUITTERS NEVER WIN". Knowing the owner that wound up with Harry's watch I just thought I'd throw that it( One of the two Larry's that worked under Ronnie Householder back then)

Big if you have some Ronnie Householder stories please share them. Most folks don't know who he was & the important role he played in Chrysler performance.

No real story's about Ronnie per say. One of the Larry's and I became good friends in the mid '60s with other mutual interests and remain good friendz to this day. I used to call my Pal Larry every so often to see if he wanted to have lunch when everything was still happening at the old Hamtramick facility. They'd break for lunch and we'd meet up at one or another of the restaurants in what waz and still iz PoleTown just down the street and around the corner from Chrysler Hamtramick. Thru' my Pal Larry I met 1st the other Larry, Then Ronnie started joining in for the lunch breaks, and Then finally John W joined the group too. In (I think) early '71 Ronnie took ill and had to retire.(We lost him shortly there after) His torch was passed to the other Larry and My friend moved over to the Emissions Lab up on 15 or 16 mile road(can't remember) John W. stayed with the engine development program and moved up after the other Larry retired and even headed up the pickup truck racing program up until his retirement a few years ago. I ran into John a few years back at Carlisle when he was there with Tom Hoover and the Ramcharger guyz giving seminar talks. I walked up behind him and said in my best high voice that anybody that ever road dirt bikes would probably play with himself in public. John spun around with his jawz tight and when he saw who said it he just got a big grin on his face and we hugged and had a great 1/2 hour talk before he had to take the stage for his .02 worth. I do have 1 very beat up 8X10 black and white of Ronnie and my friend Larry standing on both sides of King Richard at one of the Carolina 500 races but I have no clue how to add it to this post.....,FWI, thru' my Pal Larry over a 5-6 year period late '60s early '70s At the Old Michigan International Speedway I was privileged and fortunate to meet and shake hands with most of the HOT SHOES doin' laps in those dayz regardless of what flag they flew, Mopar, Bowtie, Blue Oval, it didn't mater after the race waz run. We had pit and Paddock passes and would set up a 24X24 canopy in the paddock at the end of pit row and start cookin' on 3-4 Weber's 'bout half way thru' the race and once the checkered flag dropped and the dust settled every body came runnin'. Chickin', dawgz, 'burgerz, beer, vodka spiked watermellon. Good memories and good times, Jer

Wow that's pretty cool BIG. I bet you will think of some cool stuff to add. Are you referring to Larry Rathgab? Didn't he end up working for the Petty's. As for that pic. You can tack a pic with your phone & upload it on here. Would love to see it. Find a teenager if you need help. That's what I do. Those are some important people you had lunch with. Very cool!

This has been among the best threads I've followed on this site. Thanks Bob for all the great history on what has become such a diluted( IMHO) sport.

I agree! great thread! I am follow a series of articles in "Mopar Action" about Chrysler's racing program from the 60's and 70's. It is based on a book called "Conversations with a winner - The Ray Nichels story" So far they are on part 15 and are covering 1968. Better pictures in this thread!! Thanks again CBB!
Oops! Just did a search, Part 16 is on news stands now!

Special paint

White paint? Yes it was a idea Chrysler had. Supposed to be a little more slippery. Must not have worked. Now I'm wondering if this has something to do with Roy Hills early Dusters being blue & white
