But if you get any cracks started at those undercuts, amount of fillet welds will mean nothing.
The steel will start to tear right along the top of that weld.
And the red-line welded area will then work-harden and fail pretty quickly.
But I'm sure you'll be monitoring and catch it before that.

Yessir, True, but as I mentioned, that’s assuming that it exceeds the elastic deformation limit and enters plastic deformation. If the elastic deformation limit is never exceeded, then indications (cracks) won’t form because the rupture stress wasn’t achieved to cause the material to plastically deform.
