Hello FCBO,

This site rocks! What is the best "new" carb to put on my 440? It is a stock motor, only the heads were rebuilt and I put in hardened valve seats. I have heard a wide range of answers so I am going to poll the pros. Not that you can be too concerned with mileage, but does any brand/model get better mileage on a stock 1968 440? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Best Regards,

Preston

I installed an Edlebrock 750 on my 69 300 and it made a BIG difference. Nice thing about the Edlebrock is that you can fine tune them to your needs with simple needle and seat changes. Edlebrock offers a wide range of parts to tune for economy....or power.

I've been waiting for this question to finally pop up here in this forum.
We can now all get into a rockem sockem barroom brawl between Eddie's and Holley's.
And i'm staying out of it....

I put an Edelbrock 600 on my NY'er 400. Runs great right out of the box. I didn't even have to adjust the idle adjustment. I took a road trip around Ocean City Maryland and averaged 15.5 mpg. I've used these carbs on other cars with the same results.

Holley makes a great carb also, but it helps to be knowledgable about them to set them up and keep them working right. Not everyone wants to mess with them.
Like 1978NYB said.... Take it out of the box.... bolt it on and go worry about something else. The ease of tuning the Edlebrock to match your driving preference is a nice feature also.

My 68 Monaco 500 with a mild built 440 has the Eddy #1411 750cfm Performer Series carb. Sets you back into the seat nicely when you open up the secondaries. BTW gas mileage and 440 in the same sentence "does not compute".

There's never been a Holley or an Edelbrock that has been plug 'n play right out of the box.
They're universal carburetors meaning there's not a car in the universe it was designed for.
I have never had a new carb that ran perfectly upon installation.

New carb......

I have.... and it was an Edlebrock 750..... even the choke was perfect.
I felt terrible..... Nothing to do. So I reset the timing.... feel better now.

I've driven 3000 miles since I put the Eddie on and haven't made an adjustment yet.

Maybe it was just such a vast improvement over how it ran before but that doesn't mean you are using it to its full capacity. You could very well benefit from some tuning. Just my .02!

Without a doubt. I was getting 8.5 mpg when I got her. The single exhaust had a clogged cat. The exhaust pipe was so black and had more soot that my house chimney. Replaced with duals from the manifolds with Flowmasters. The lean burn wasn't working. Installed Mopar conversion kit. T/Q was shot, too many problems to list. Replaced with Eddie intake and carb. Pretty much eliminated all of the emission controls. Now when driving VERY conservative I can get 15.5 mpg. The way I normally drive it's closer to 13.5 mpg. She idles at 800 rpm, electric choke works. WOT is insane. No adjustments needed for now.

Choke opens and closes accurately. perfect idle, strong WOT, no hesitation or bog, not too lean - not too rich.....
I have the worst luck in the world or I am way, WAY, too anal...

I guess I've been lucky with the 1406 Eddie. I also have the cruise control hooked up to the carb and it works too. We'll see this winter when it gets cold whether the adjustments are true. It should be.

I have no dog in the fight, using a Holley Pro-jection TBI on my 383. I read that Edelbrock is simple and reliable. A well-tuned Holley is better, but that is a higher technical threshold. The very best is a Thermoquad or Quadrajet, but not usually available new, though I vaguely recall reading of some aftermarket Quadrajet designs. Personally, I would get a simple carb that runs for now, and look into TBI. MPFI would be best, but intakes for a BB or RB are rare or custom.

What size carb and motor are you addressing? Just about to order a Eddie 750 and a bunch of guys were telling me it was too big for a stock motor.

Best Regards,

Preston

In my opinion, based on a stock 440, I would put an Edelbrock 750 with an electric choke which is Model # 1411.
