Pretty nondescript ad without pics and offered for months already, as Carsten already knew about the car before; pretty likely but no use, just move on and post pics and description after buying a car if you want to make it for sure. Just my 2 cents.

'nuff said.............

Depends on what you mean by "commitment" . There was no signed contract if that is what you're getting at, but I had arranged an inspection and he agreed to a price to be paid in cash by my agent if the inspection was satisfactory. Thereafter, the agent had trouble getting hold of the guy and when he could he was evasive. That said, I suppose gazumping doesn't occur in your neck of the woods?

"Commitment" can be a super gray are without borders.
I once let a 5 month old Vette get picked up and shipped off without so much as a penny in hand or anything in writing. Totally a verbal agreement.
Other times I wanted their first born and a pound of flesh as a deposit.

If an FCBO regular bought my car, I would do the same as with the Vette.
If it was a Moparts member, be at my door with cash before you even get the key.

I paid in full for the Canadian car before it left the seller's house. I was also paid in full by Hemi while I still had possession of the yellow car. That's about all you can do when a face to face cash exchange isn't possible.

Just get a strong promise from the seller that the car is off the market while he awaits receipt of your cash & let him know that the cash is on the way presently.

I would never give away my car to a stranger, I agree with that! But I never asked the seller to do that. I pleased him to let me pay it before I have ever seen it, but he don't let me...
I just had bad luck with the seller... He was oldschool or paranoid...

With every car, I learned more out of my mistakes!

From what I read in this thread, if I were the seller I would have concidered the car sold and, giving the circumstances, allowed the buyer a reasonable amount of time to arrange payment to my terms. It's obvious that if someone in another country makes several contacts and attempts to get payment...... that person is enthusiastic about the car.

A person with morals would do that unless there was something shady about the car.... Or they were desperate to sell.
Although not bound by contract aside from verbal...... That seller is still a scumbag in my view. :eusa_snooty:

Concider this. The car was advertized at $1750.00 OBO.... Was offered $2K buy a fellow on this website. Then sold the car to someone else....? If he got 2K for it then it likely had to be from someone who saw it here. Another scumbag.

A good lesson ...... Don't reveal the contact before closing the deal.... Kinda like what Mark did.

One of the things that we teach salespeople is that you can't get mad at someone for doing something that you didn't tell them they couldn't do.

I always get a strong promise from the seller to tell anyone else who asks that the car is sold. Give me your word that the car is officially sold to me for the agreed price & I give you my word that I will send the cash immediately or deliver it in person on an agreed date.

Problem solved, usually....

Well then it seems our job here is done Actually we all learn more here out of everyone's mistakes.

your job here is never done! I wanna hear your opinion in future, but maybe with a little negotiation-delay ;)

I just found a note from craigslist itself under another offer...

I think I have to thank craigslist for the sellers paranoia...

.

Agreed on most you said, but if I would like to get rid of a "smelly" car I'd be glad to ship it overseas and out of the country
sight unseen with the seller.

This was my first almost bought car... It's sold to a guy in Florida,he said. It was on craigslist for more than two weeks before I contaced the seller. I wanted to solve a few problems about shipping etc. before contacting the seller; and then it was too late. :(

Link changed ;) I know this list, thank you! No 1969 for now.
