1971 N-code Factory Sunroof Newport

@ayilar is tied up most of the day, today, with his job, so I will try to clear up some of the questions. He has a family and as such, limited time to spend on his vehicles and the number of them that he can manage. He feels he can reasonably handle 3 of them, and while he has found two of his favorites, he is still looking for another one that is his real top goal - a 72 model Chrysler in the same or very similar colors.

But he really likes this one too very much. He asked me about the car and what I thought after Matt had taken some 60 detail photos for him of this car (thank you Matt!). He also knows that I do already have a few sunroof cars and am familiar with how to restore them and where to get the parts etc. He also knows that I like restoring them to showroom level condition and so he offered to let me buy the car and should I ever decide to sell it, I would ensure he would get the first right of refusal. So that is the agreement/plan going forward and therefore a form of joint ownership. I have some 33 pages of personal emails on this forum with him since he became a member, so we know and trust each other fully - so things like this can work well. I consider myself as its caretaker for now and he will get the car later on (I am up there in age while he is still young). We also have a mutual friend in Wyatt @71Polara383 with whom we both interact a lot as well and is also a very good friend.

I don't remember seeing any sunroof cars without a Vinyl top. Any cars known with a painted Roof or was this some sort of mandatory Option ?

Yes, all sunroof cars of this era were mandatory vinyl roofs. Due to the outsourcing of the sunroof installation.

Come to think of it I guess the 300 Hurst sunroof car didn*t have the Vinyl top, but with only one car produced this is no regular production car.

As @69monaco pointed out, '71 Newports with sunroofs were depicted in Chrysler promotional materials -- including a red Royal and (in black&white) a Newport. This said, till this car popped up, I had never seen a Newport with sunroof. Enjoy, courtesy of Fuselage.de:

1971 Chrysler Newport 383 V8 Police Interceptor - $2550

Runs & Drives. This car has been stored in a garage for many years until this spring when I bought it. The previous owner had planned on a complete restoration and recently passed away. It has not been driven in a few years. It has the hard to find 383 Police Interceptor engine. The car has minor rust for the year, particularly around the rear wheel wells. The interior is intact but needs cleaning. The rag top is torn in a few spots. I am pricing it cheap for quick sale. The odometer reads 41,370 but it may have been rolled over.

Matt has looked over the car carefully and I have also studied the photos in detail. We both believe this car's odometer has not rolled over. That will make the restoration significantly less difficult.

There was a FQ5, white vinyl top '69 Newport near me back in the late seventies/early eighties. I had a Q5 A12 Roadrunner at the time and I kinda lusted over that Newport. I watched it deteriorate over the years and the last I saw it, it was pretty sad.

I don't remember/wasn't paying attention if it was a sunroof car or not. Probably wasn't.

Ah. . . So that's the deal. A very unique arrangement. So Steve. . . Are there other C-Body cars you are looking to acquire? If I find one, are you ready to do another such deal ?

I can't tell from your pictures, but is the symbol in the middle of your grill as it should be? If not, I have one. I pulled it from a '71 in a yard years ago; was going to put it on mine until I learned that the '70s did not have one.

Thanks for the offer. There are some emblems in the car already that are not on the car, such as the lower front fender NEWPORT emblems that are missing, so the one on the grille might be in there too. If I can't find one, I will get in touch with you. Good eye! Thanks!
