1972 Imperial Revival Thread

NOS exhaust parts are here. I hope to rebuild the carburetor this weekend and get it started. Carburetor kit should be here tomorrow. I have a couple parts carburetors that I can use as well.

I am stuck with two carburetors I am not happy with. One some do his converted to mechanical secondaries and decided it would be a good idea to put RTV is the secondary diaphragm oriface. The other some other dingus brazed over some air bleeds on the primaries and the hot-idle compensator valve hole. I’m not happy. The original carburetor was corroded beyond repair.

So I have a fresh battery and I get power in the car, and the starter turns over. I do not have 12v to the coil. I am working on diagnostics.

So I have power to the ECU but no power coming out of it. Brand new and it’s garbage. I am disgusted that I have to do this again. I really want to get a Rev-n-nator but they are out of stock. This thing is not worth the first penny.

Love this thread! Great job with this Beauty.
Thanks! I appreciate it. She has to make it to Carlisle! I was so close to success this weekend. Mancini Racing saves the day with one of their ECUs. Hope to have it mid week. If she fires, she will get NOS spark plugs.

I got an ECU that is more subtle and looks closer to the original. I really am going to put NOS Champion J11Y spark plugs in the engine. I pulled one plug and it was tan. Looks like this car was running yesterday!

It’s too cold, too dark and too late to do the other 7 cylinders. I will have to wait for the weekend.

I have to order some vapor hoses for the charcoal canister, but it’s coming along.

A side note is the Imperial still has a charge of R-12 in the A/C system!

I ordered the replacement vacuum nipple for the back of the intake since I had one connection break off. I picked up 5 qts of 10W40 in anticipation of the first oil change. I got the air filter in.

I wanted to get some work done this weekend but of course I got sick. Plenty to do, but it will have to wait.

Those 4160 Holley carburetors were notoriously bad. 1972 was the last year Chrysler used them - for good reason. The metering blocks warp over time (about 20K miles). Most rebuilders won't touch them. You would be far better off with a new/modern comparable Holley 4 bbl. The current ones have quality castings whereas the original ones did not. The new ones are relatively expensive but you would likely be money ahead to just get a new one than try to rebuild that one.

It’s already rebuilt. If I have any issues I will just order a new one anyways. It’s worth a shot to get the car running.

Some details from the engine. The fan clutch is original and still good. Time to get the pulleys out and confirm TDC and the #1 spark plug wire. The car came with an extra set of pulleys that I will clean and paint.

The alternator was sent out for a rebuild and the original fuel pump was still good but I replaced it anyways. All the parts I pull off are being saved. Power steering pump looks like it is leaking.

I got the turn signals working. There have been some ground issues with the tail lamps and the right turn signal quit working. I replaced the headlamp switch and the the floodlighting started working. I will be getting the clock and radio working soon.

I as I wait for the weather to get warm I’m finding myself working on creature comforts and electrical issues.

I ordered a clock to replace the one that does not work. Also I am looking for a radio rebuild service so I can send out both of the radios that came with the car.

I like the AVS2 Edelbrock for square bore intakes. Only down side is having to order the extra throttle bracket for cable to carb.

I hope you make to Carlisle, you can park with the few other 72/73 Imperials (2). Register your Imperial in the 400 group that is full size 1924 up Imperial.

I shared the idea to replace the Holley 4160 on a 440 once and was told it would be a downgrade to install any AVS carburetor.
