I'm not a vinyl fan. A cloth interior has always been a selling point.
But comfort? Yes!
With the interior room, a simple 6-way seat, and the tilt/telly column, all the ergonomics are there that make it a cross-country cruiser. The ergonomics is all there.
All it needs for 100% perfection is a Firm-Feel steering box and the cop Power Steering pump to get it on a straight course. I dialed in as much caster on the front wheels as possible and I still have to concentrate on keeping it centered in the lane and it wears you out after awhile.

No vinyl in a New Yorker......that's leather. Other option is velour.

Newport had vinyl, or velour, or cloth but no leather option for a Newport.

No T&T or even tilt.......rare not having that on a New Yorker. The right door panel is not mounted.....just hanging there. Must of had a problem with the window motor.

Looks to be in really super condition. Hope the rain holds off.

Nice.... but not in super condition. Look at the vinyl especially around the rear window. A lot of rust under that vinyl. There is a few other problem area's for Formal's. If you look in the trunk I can almost guarantee there will be rust under the rear marker lights...just about every one of them leak when it rains. The water collects in the bottom of the rear quarters. Climb under the car and you will see the next worst area for rust in a Formal...the bottom of the rear quarters. Also behind the chrome under the rocker panel and a few other places. The cowl is another area that rusts out from leaves accumulating. Need eyeball inspection to really get an honest snapshot of condition.

If you look at the pictures I think I even see rust on the top above the vinyl.

In '78, the 400 was the standard NY engine. The 360 and 440 were optional. The 440 was not available on California cars.

1978 California options were 360 or 440. Both requiring N95 Emission Package. The 400 was not available in California or high altitude areas. High altitude areas (over 4000 feet) 360 or 440 available with N96 Emission Package.

1978 Newport's in California and high altitude areas were standard with the 360.

That car would be perfect for an evening cruise into NYC, with the soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" playing on an 8-track.

I'm going to go on living life in hopes that a Bee Gees song never comes to mind.

I was and still am a Rocker!

I was an astute "Disco Sucks" guy from day one of disco....
