2nd time in three years

Crap I forgot all about that getting caught up in the Carlisle excitement last year! Where exactly is the stand at? Details? (ie get there early to park?, etc).

this was last night...

Its a small place with a small lot. Only holds about 30 cars, last night was the first time we spilled into the field. No fee's, no trophies, bring your chairs, family and a car. Just a cool little old place with great proprietors

Thanks. Pretty sure I got it licked so far no problems whatsoever, but I never say never when it comes to old mopars...I've had to many of them, lol.

thats probably the best part. No one trying to compete against anyone.. Just yuking it up with fellow enthusiasts with some cold ice cream.

I have three cruises that I try to make two of each week.

One is a large cruise at a convenience gas station and that's cool because I see a lot of people I know and there's a lot of cars.
http://mapleroadboyz.com/ These guys really know how to do it. It is the best run large cruise I've ever been to.

The other two are small and fun. One is at a little drive in/ice cream stand a few miles from me.

The other one I always go to. Saturday morning "cars and coffee" at a local supermarket. It's very laid back... Just a bunch of guys that are up early on Saturday morning. A couple of the local clubs have made it a regular stop. Quite a few newer Mustangs and Metric Challengers along with some really neat fifties cars that I never see anywhere else. You can grab breakfast in the store's coffee shop. Good times.

Its back to the drawing board.
Came out of Home Depot today and would not start. I keep hearing this strange sound that is reminiscent of the turn signal blinker/indicator sound. It occurs every time the key is turned to the start position...and only happens once every turn of the key. So I sat there remembering that every time this happened, when the car cooled off it would start. Dammed if that wasn't the case today. I sat there for about 45mins and tried it again. It stuttered a bit and turned right over. So even though the starter cable was shot to hell, and probably did have higher resistance in it due to the acid buildup/exposed conductors, it may not have been the problem afterall. It seems to me that heat is some how exerting a negative influence on something in the ignition system or it would not matter if my car was cool or not. It ALWAYS starts when it has cooled. I have a mech wtr temp gauge (as opposed to elec) so when I shut the car down I can sit and watch the wtr temp rise b/c the coolant is no longer circulated. It usually rises to 220/230 degrees right after shutting down than slowly drops to 0 if given enough time. I've noticed in the past that it will start again when the motor has cooled to approx. 165/70 degrees. I really think this errant "blinker" noise (best way I can explain it) has something to do with this situation. I do not recall ever hearing something like this emanating from behind the dashboard until I started having this hot starting problem. I know some of you have removed/gotten behind the dashboard in your fuselage car. I'm very motivated to find out what this "noise" is b/c I really believe finding this will uncover the true issue here. Whatever it is I have to wonder if it is somehow being affected by heat level somehow.

If you take the G terminal on the starter relay straight to ground does it do it still? It could be possible that the starter relay isn't grounding like it is supposed to be and you are hearing the relay clicking. They are supposed to ground through the center terminal of the NSS switch. Its worth a shot. The sound you could be hearing may be the relay.

Damn!!!! I know you're probably thinking of torching the car for the insurance money at this point.

Gary, when you're calmed down, write down everything that is new so we can figure out what's left. And would you please eventually get around to doing my fusible link test???

I know where you going with that....fusible link heats up, disables car. Temp returns to normal and its like nothing ever happened. I dunno I just got a bad feeling its not that, but I'll use a hair dryer to see what happens tomorrow. Gotta be very clandestine about borrowing it or I'll be homeless.

One question... Is this the same starter that you've had all along?

Can you describe exactly what happens? The engine does not turn over at all or turns over slowly? When it cools off to 160 does it not turn over at all, turn over slowly or turns over like it does when it's cold?

The buzzing has me puzzled. There's nothing there to buzz and the only electro/mechanical things in the system are the starter and the relay.

Your puzzled,lol.

>>No. This unit is fairly brand new. I wanted to rule the starter out of the picture. I tested it before install.

Can you describe exactly what happens?
>>Turn key all the way to start position. Nothing occurs EXCEPT for a "click" sound which seems to be coming from within the dashboard, somewhere in the middle or closer to pass side. This "click" sounds like the turn signal blinker, but not continuous. It occurs once.

The engine does not turn over at all or turns over slowly?
>>>>The engine (nor starter) do not engage at all. Nothing spins.

When it cools off to 160 does it not turn over at all, turn over slowly or turns over like it does when it's cold?
>>>>I had the wherewithal to look at the temp gauge while sitting there waiting. It came down from about 220/30 to 160. I tried it again at that point (160). I heard the "click" and at the same time the starter motor engaged....took less than a 2 second for the motor to turn over and run.

There's nothing there to buzz and the only electro/mechanical things in the system are the starter and the relay.
>>>>There's no buzz, just a click whenever the key is turned.
The next time this occurs (I have no reason to believe it will not)I'll make a video and post it. Pictures worth 1000 words. Video, probably five hundred million words, more or less.

Where is your timing set? Try backing it off about 5°.

I have seen cars do the exact same thing... timing was set too advanced and the car would start fine cold... not turn over hot.

Mechanical advance is set at about 10 or 12 degrees BTDC.....back it down 5 degrees from that?
