65 Polara 500 426 What is it worth?

And this is why we have Forums.

It would help the value if it came with the original engine parts and air filter, which are tough to locate and very expensive to buy.
It might be worth five figures if it were a 4 speed also, the automatic is a spoiler.

Nice Polara. It appears to be a strong No. 3 car. Collector Car Market indicates a base 383 No.3 car to be $5300. A 25% premium is added for the 426 engine, indicating an average retail of $6625. BUT. . . If the car is totally rust free and if it could be easily upgraded to a No. 2, I think you are looking at $7000 to $8000. In any event, I would use these figures to negotiate the purchase price.

Given the strong market for these cars especially with the Street Wedge 8k is way low for this car. What are you using to come up with this number? If you are using Haggerty they go by the auction market which is certainly not a true reflection of the market.

This appears to be a pretty nice car. With a little detailing i.e. engine compartment paint, replacing the aftermarket parts with original engine parts and finding the right buyer should garner numbers well above 8k.

I'd put the car, as is, between a 3-4 condition.

See Wil's post. I used the same Collector Car Market site that he referenced. These guys claim they use more sources than just auctions to develop their database of estimated values. Also, I agree with you that one could get more money for the car - once its in No. 2 condition - but the car ain't there yet; and who knows what it would really require (money, time and effort) to get it to that level. Again, $15K is a stratospheric estimate found only in Stan's 3rd standard deviation of estimated values. . .

If you use stand deviation then it's 99.85% of the sellers are looking for 0.15% of the buyers

Also, you could turn the whole thing upside down in that 99.5% of buyers are looking for an $800 Polara offered for sale by .15% of the Polara sellers. . .

I like the car and think it's unique because of the 426, but I'd never pay five figures for it. 8k seems like the high side if those minor issues mentioned were fixed. I'd love to see where they sell these old boats for 15-20k, I need to work there!

One thing I've learned is that the car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it simple as that. There is an *** for every seat otherwise I would have 300 Darts on the lot versus 1. Usual rule is start higher than you expect and reduce price until it sells. It's apparent here that there are people prepared to pay mid teens as well as 5-8k so there are buyers just have to find the 1....use balloons they sell cars trust me:)

I appreciate all the input. It doesn't surprise me that the members of the Forum are all over the place with the values. That seems to be the norm for C-bodies. Prices are all over the place. You can find a C body in decent shape one day and then find a better one at half the price the next day and then another in similar condition for three times the price. In another thread, someone posted another price source for a Fury. I just checked that one and found this for the Polara.
Using the ratings guide I would put it between a 4 and a 6, but the rust free unrestored survivor status might bump it up a bit. I still think low 20's is where it should be.

While it may be rare that most vehicles will ever approach a"perfect 10" in value, the "10" is listed to show what potential a really exceptional example could be worth. It will not be surprising that some vehicles could exceed a "10"; for these vehicles and their values we recommend referring to their value as a "10 +" (plus).

S: SALVAGEABLE: May not be in running condition but physically salvageable with many parts in good condition but fairly rough physically. Basically you have something here to work with that's more valuable than scrap metal or a model that possesses some rare qualities, possibly a parts car.

2: RESTORATION PROJECT: Good solid vehicle with great potential. Either a total cosmetic restoration or major mechanical repair maybe needed. A vehicle that requires some work to make it a driver or show car but not a hopeless case.

4: DRIVER: A complete auto in need of minor cosmetic or mechanical repairs. Very presentable but may still need a fair amount of detail work to progress to show worthy condition. A "driver" is a car that's very presentable and runs very well but may lack certain authentic original details or may possess minor flaws causing it to fall short of being a show quality car.

6: VERY GOOD: Good original auto or restoration. Most restored show condition vehicles will fall into this category.

8: EXCELLENT: Show winner. A near flawless auto or a rare vehicle in great condition needing very little. Also an exceptionally original vehicle with very low miles. Could also be an exceptional clone or recreation.

10: EXEMPLARY or EXTREMELY RARE: We expect that few autos will ever place into this category. Extraordinary ground up restoration, flawless paint, excellent running condition, very rare, extremely rare, matching numbers, provenance, unique auto with amazingly low miles, documented rare color or optioned, these are some of the possible qualities that a vehicle in this category may posses.

10+: We acknowledge that values are constantly changing and will from time to time exceed our top listed value of"10". A value of "10+" can be used to describe a vehicle that exceeds "10".

Taking all the informed opinions and facts who contributed to this thread and only seeing a small fraction a large car (3pics) if it's as solid and original as stated it's an $8-10,000 car. Maybe a little more on a good day to the "perfect" buyer. Considering that if your in the market for a nice classic the desirability for our beloved C bodies is still low in comparison . There are B Bodies that are just as clean on the market for the same money. And they hold a little more re-sale. With that said, I love the car and would be proud to own it.

Nice car. But there is something in the equation I don't get: Standard log manifolds. Standard BB intake. Standard (aftermarket free flowing) air cleaner. In a claimed 426 Hemi... I just don't get it.

Unless it'a typo.

Overall, it looks a lot liike a regular 413 to me.

Well. . . We've asked for the build sheet. . . And I'd like to see the fender tag and the VIN too. I didn't see the "HEMI" reference.

426 Street Wedge.

No, its not a Hemi. Just a 426 wedge 4 bbl. I have seen the car twice and never outside of the garage. Thats why there aren't more pictures. They did recently pull it out to take a bunch of photos for an interested party in New Zealand. If they send me those pictures, I will add a few more. The car has not yet been advertised for sale other than word of mouth. Still just trying to figure out a fair price for it.

Jim: Does the car run ? And are you thinking of buying it ?
