I have a 76 New Yorker with a 440 that runs runs great. It has one issue, it makes a whistling noise or vacuum like sound when running at speed. As soon as you shift to neutral the sound disappears. The car does not have cruise control. I can't figure out what this is, some hose not connected right or something? I would appreciate any suggestions or help. Thanks

There's 2,434,617 miles of vacuum tubing on these cars.
1. Where is it coming from specifically??

Thanks for the extremely quick reply. You hear the sound in the defrost area and vent right in front of the driver. I felt the area with my hand but felt no air coming through.

Stan's the MAN!!! My 75 had the same issue, Stan recommended I disconnected the vacuum line to the Ebrake release! Which is under the hood behind the Carb.. And VWALA!!!! No more whistles.. and you can still manually release the Ebrake by foot.. (Note) be very careful when releasing the Ebrake manually using your foot! That release is right next to your fuse box under the dash. One slip of the foot and your fuse box is on the floor.. FYI no Bueno!!!!!
I'll take a picture of mine and post it if you'd like, I would guess they're in the same position between 75 and 76.

Here ya go.. the RED circle is the Manual Brake release..next to your fuse box.. Please be careful when releasing it!!!! I use my hand just to be safe, and the BLUE is the Ebrake peddle as a location reference, The other pic is where MY vacuum line for that brake release WAS connected. I found it easier to disconnect under the hood, (right behind the carburetor on the manifold) vice under the dash. My car is a 75, yours is the 76, I'm not sure if it's in the same location, but at least the pictures will give you an idea of what to look for. Hope this helps, keep us posted.

I have to ask...
Why don't you fix it?

Good question.. when it was hissing and whistling I was looking for a quick fix, of which you help me out with. But now that you mention it, how would I do that? Wasn't sure if it was overly complicated. Don't give me wrong, I enjoy working on the car very much. But I wasn't sure if that was opening Pandora's box Or not. Take me to school oh wise one!

A vacuum hose runs from the back of the intake manifold and through the firewall.
Under the dash, the hose connects to a tee.
From the tee, one hose goes to the column and the other goes to the parking brake.
Make sure they are all connected.

10-4 good buddy. I'll take a look. So the hissing probably came from a possible disconnected / dried out rubber vacuum line? Or is there another part or canister that may have gone bad? Thanks again Stan.
