Me and a gracious and skilled FCBO member (with experience with this with other members he's helped with "eyes on") have a plan for him to thoroughly inspect the car for me on this saturday .. if its not sold.

tell me, and others, the "what fer" on this one and then i'll know what i need to do. thanks y'all for chimin' in.

PLEASE don't check the appearance only to base a price.
The mechanicals and the electrical don't make themselves apparent on just a buying inspection on Formals. Drive it for half an hour and fiddle with every last knob, switch, and lever.

good advice. youre right and thanks

but, respecting the owner's and FCBO member's time, i am willing to accept a variety of issues with a 42 year old car .. with known issues that a price deal could take into account.

What i dont want is RUST, engine knock/smoke, running hot, tranny slipping, diff grinding, cigarette smoke, mice, and mold (appearance and smell).

i will put cosmetic money in but dont wanna project car. Nice, original looking daily driver is my goal for this one.

this car would get demerits for non-original engine (if that's the case) plus any of that stuff above. it gets demerits if something seller says is true is NOT true. It gets pluses for interior, sunroof, 440 (orginal or not) and its a coupe i happen to like.

I have optimism in the meantime that is a diamond in the rough .. hope it lasts till i can get it looked at.

Update.

LocuMob (youre the best man - thanks) did me a great favor and checked out this New Yorker. End of the day, it was less original (a few high-performance mods) than I wanted, and had more "project-like" issues than I was looking for.

It was a clean, solid car ..mostly (driver-side low is where the body issues were, quarterpanel low where commando1 suspected - good call) .. and definitely NOT a basket case.

Again, no dissin' the seller or the car ..BUT while NOT a "diamond in the rough", it was more like a "cubic zirconia that needs a lotta polishing".

Anybody who needs more info, you can PM me.

I’m with Stan... $2k is what it’s worth as is.... and as Jeff said, only if the AutoTemp II is up and running.

By the way Jeff, I don’t have that much flexibility of late.... so you're on your own on this one.

The seller made sure to mention that there were others interested when I looked at it. I just looked at him and smiled.

So have any of you bought this tempting sun roof New Yorker? Don't leave me hanging here!!

nope, i did not change my mind.

It had a 3:55 gear (seller explained the 2:71 gear in trunk was a spare .. that made no sense so he didnt know that was the ORIGINAL gear?), engine was strong and had build documentation, but as UNoriginal as it could be, spray bombed pass quarter, assorted dings all around of the pesky kind, pretty but ruined front bumper, driver side rust low, and curiously misplaced "fender tags".

i repeat car was NOT a basket case .. but had I bought it sight unseen i woulda been pissed. Seller just didnt represent this car properly, had every chance to, but finally LocuMob had to go see it to help me erase ALL the curiousities/omissions about it.

My offer would have been $2200, to max $2500 - no kidding, I did NOT make any offer at all though given seller wanted $4000.. I give seller benefit of doubt (seemed like a nice guy) he did NOT intend to mislead .. just inexperienced maybe?

hope it found a good home.

That is the typical condition of these cars. It would take $10k-$20k to restore this one. If the rear quarters are that rusted there is rust under the vinyl, under the rockers, under the side trim, the cowl has some rust issues. There is no saving of that leather....its done. Plus I'm sure there are door panel, dash pad, sail panel issues too. Best bet is to find a low mileage rust free car out west for $5k-$8k and be done with it.

BTW, there are zero parts being repopped for these cars so it is getting almost impossible to find a donor car that has anything interior wise in better condition than we see here.
