8-3/4 Sure-Grip Questions

Thanks Dave, That's a lot easier to read than the parts book. Looks like 1969 C-body wagons had a different length axle than non-wagons.

They made a lot of changes to the cars with the new body style starting in '72, can't remember them all after 45 years.

any reason you don't take the whole thing home?

I don't have any more room in my basement (Basement is devoted to my EBay AMC & Jeep NOS parts business) or garage (Garage is devoted to my construction business). If I brought the whole thing home I'd have to leave it outside which I'd rather not do. If I end up getting a 1972 1973 Fury there's a good chance it'll have a 318 or 360 at which point it'll have a 8 1/4 axle if I'm not mistaken. I probably wouldn't go through all the work and effort to change out the entire axle. So I'm buying the third member on the slim chance my car will have a 8-3/4 axle. Worst-case scenario I'll sell the third member If I'm certain I don't need it.

Went to the junkyard today. Got the third member, both axle shafts and both brake drums. Didn't feel any debris sitting on the bottom. This was a surprisingly easy job. Unfortunately the brake backing plates were damaged by the morons who removed the axle. It looks like they wanted to see if it would bounce if they dropped it from 4 feet.

It has 3.23 gears. I'm sure this is a desirable gear ratio but I think I would rather have 2.93 or 2.76 for better highway cruising. As far as I can tell it looks to be in good shape.

This looks like an original 1973 axle, correct?

Come to find out my 73 Fury I Taxi has 11X2.5 rear brakes so I'll hold onto the drums if they're hard to find. I'm kinda curious are these brakes all that unusual especially when they're mounted to a 8-1/4 axle (Not 8-3/4) The axle in my Fury is a 8-1/4 open rear end with 2.94 gears.

The Chrysler wagon this axle came out of is in a junkyard in Clinton MA. I'll post pictures and more information in a different section of the forum.

The 3.23 ratio was used to get this rather large beast to where it would move. If you plan to put this third member in a big block car it is still a good choice for overall driving especially if you desire some performance from a post '71 smog motor. This ratio was standard on most 383, 400 and 440 equipped cars in the late '60's and early 70's. Some of the Imperials and other large Chryslers used the 2.76 or 2.93 for better fuel economy. In the smog era the emphasis on performance had largely gone away in favor of fuel economy.
