DSC01989.jpgDSC01990.jpgDSC01993.jpgDSC01994.jpgDSC01997.jpgDSC01998.jpgI have an AM/FM/CB factory radio in a 1978 NY'er. The antenna is broken and I'm trying to identify and figure out if it's a power antenna without taking the fender support and inner fender off. I do not have a power antenna switch so I'm thinking the antenna mast goes up when the radio is powered up and goes down with power turned off. I can't view the antenna base to see if there are wires going to it. Pete, does the base and the bezel look similiar to your 1979 NY'er antenna. Or does anyone else have a 78 NY'er with the AM/FM/CB that can shed any light on the antenna.

Brown and Yellow wires running in that area are the clue, nothing else in that area but the blower motor.

Here's a pic of a NOS AM/FM?CB radio antenna from ebay.
Definitely looks like a fixed mast antenna!
The reason it was a fixed mast antenna for that radio is because if the antenna is not in the fully extended position, the CB unit would burn out (It's an SWR thingie...)

Do you see the pin in the 3rd picture. The antenna mast was about 24"-30" one piece that was just sitting on top of the pin in the 3rd picture. I don't see how it could screw on the base. There's no threads. When I was driving her home the 1st time.......the antenna mast just blew off. Never found it. The Chrysler picture of the antenna mast you posted looks close to the mast that I kind of remember. Will that Ford disguise antenna work.

I still don't know what direction I want to gowith the radi. The AM/FM half *** works....the tuning dial hangs up. My plan was to hook up an adaptive aftermarket device that allows me to plug in my ipod. I'll have to do something about the antenna either way.

Or plan B is to put a modern radio that will let me plug in my ipod and put some sort of one piece solid antenna mast similiar to the one on my truck.

Just sawzall a hole in the dash big enough for a nice aftermarket unit & move on.

I haven't listened to FM radio in years cuz it sucks. Satellite antennas are small & easy to mount about anywhere.

I need a sawzall to get at it. I still haven't decided what I want to do yet. I don't even need an antenna....I just want someway to plug my ipod in with a cable. Be it a conversion using the current radio or an aftermarket that has an ipod plug in. If I put an antenna in it will be modern one piece screw in mast or I might look for a way to put a chrome cap or block off plate to close the antenna hole.

This looks different than both my '78 and '79 and both are power switched by the radio on/off switch. My '78 has the am/fm cb radio. If you can zoom in on my '78 NYB pictures on this website you may see more. Both are in storage away from home until late spring/summer. Getting to the wires from firewall out are terrible. The tracing of the wires came thru a gromet by the outside of the passenger side of the heater core/evap. I believe the brown/orange was mentioned and that sounds correct.

I might just put an aftermarket radio with an ipod plug in and a non retract antenna.

Regardless, its not like your car is all original, its built as a cruiser and for you to enjoy, you got to have those tunes

Yep, I have rear speakers and an ipod with at least 15,000 songs on it already.

Power antenna wires are not visible , if there are any, until you remove the inner fender.

I don't think he'll need it. It's a fixed mast antenna (you unscrew it for car washes).

You are incorrect..

The wires can be seen by looking down into the area of the blower motor.

The '78 tri-band radio antenna is automatic.
