So i find water in my oil of my dodge intrepid 2.7l v6, ok i do a bit of research, its gonna be the water pump, no big deal, shouldnt take too much to do this, yeah. So where does chrysler put the water pump in such an engine? INSIDE the motor! Ok ok, no big deal a little more labor than usual, lets get to that water pump, holy crap, i hope people like reading a copy of War and Peace while i do this.
First up you take out the headlights, yes headlights, then the top panel covering the radiator, ok, now the radiator comes out, no big deal a bit of workin the aircon condenser out of the way of the transmission cooler attached to the radiator and sandwiched in. Im getting there i think so myself, oh no, not at all. i have to pull the front harmonic balancer out to expose the timing case cover, ahh but the idle wheel pulley for the power steering etc is in the way, have to pull the power steering pump out too, ok ok, getting there i think to myself, damn this is convoluted.
Ok pulls the timing case over off and see the water pump nestled behind the timing tensioners and timing chain, ah crap wtf??? Sighs, off with the plenum chamber on top to expose the top bolts of the rocker covers and start dismantling the top of the engine, geez i been at this almost five hours now and i havent even touched the water pump yet. Ok so now i got the covers off and the plenum chamber off and look at that, i now have to undo the belt tensioners before i even think about seeing how i get that chain out, oh some plugs on the front of the heads you need to undo using a large hex spanner, ugh i dont have the right size its 7.30pm, screw this crap im done for the night, tosses spanner at the mess and walks out....

Yikes. You have to wonder why a mfg would build a car that way. I always thought it would be easier to work on the Intrepid with the engine being placed like it is.

my mothers car is a 2000 Intrepid RT with auto stick and 3.5 engine.....nothing but trouble. My brother and I replaced the belts and it was a MISSION we had to take apart the whole front end. Then a year later the car wouldn't pass smog

My metric vehicles go to the dealer. Eff that crap. I'm not dealing with all this kind of BS. Let Hernandez who got his ASE cert last month learn new swear words.

I had a 2002 Cadillac De Ville for a short time. The damn starter was under the intake plenum and the battery was under the rear seat!

And the Intrepid is worse for batteries! You have to remove the air cleaner element box in totality to expose the battery terminals and remove the battery hold down, then remove the passenger wheel and then pull out the wheel arch cover to expose the battery to slide it out through the wheel well, Advance auto does this for free? Well Im letting them!

That's what I do.
I pick out the wiper blades, hand them to Manuel and say "here - go put them on..."
While it's a torrential Florida downpour....

See the downpour i can handle being an Aussie we can have droughts lasting ten years, ooo water you say?

you do know cars nowadays are deliberately designed that way, don't you? This way instead of doing it yourself you'll take it to the garage......essentially eliminating the home mechanic. And they still serve the same function, to get us from pt A to pt B. Absolutely way too much unnecessary stuff on cars anymore.

if it was a 1980 or earlier you could have changed it in less than 2 hrs on most cars.

My 2nd 4 wheel love behind the Batwagon is playing with my '83 Plymouth Scamp FWD Pickup. It takes 2 tool boxes to play with that one little ride. Mid '80s were Mothers cross over years and I still get surprised after 15 years and this one being the 4th one. BTW. I did the battery swap on the '02 300M but when it came to the belt swap the dealer got the call, and the water pump got replaced while they were in there. Jer

Does anyone want to venture a guess where they put the battery in a newer Jeep Grand Cherokee??????...............................................................

You are correct sir, under the passenger side front seat!? WTF?!

I wonder how long it will be before you have to pay a professional to refuel your car?

Try replacing an alternator on a 1991 Z34 Chevy Lumina......only then to find out your NAPA rebuild is garbage. I think I even taught my dad some new words that weekend. It requires pulling the passenger side axle shaft. Rediculous.

When it rains it pours, i still haven't gotten to the water pump after two more hours of work, then I get a call telling me my son in law is stuck in town with a blown motor, pull out the tow dolly and go pick him up and now i got another car to work on I'm sure, plus my wife tells me her car's heater isnt working and dammit fixit asap....
