C-Body Holy Grail Restoration Starts Here; 1970 6BBL GT

I sourced an original and dated windage tray from Rocket Restoration.

Sand blasted and fit it to the NOS 187 pan. All correct 6BBL Fury stuff.

Fits like a glove.

Love those baffles in the pan.

I think those two items add about 3-5 HP....not sure on that exactly.

I paid a visit to Scott at HARMS last weekend. I dropped off the carbs personally, as I wanted to get an “eyes on” inspection of their overall condition, etc., and date codes.

Scott said they are A-OK and ready for rebuilding. He rebushes, replates all fasteners, install all new components, and factory stampings including date stamps. And then test runs the restored carburetors on a running test engine.

The carbs should be done in about 6 weeks. His work is simply the best.

Here is a before shot....I will post a photo of the restored carbs in 6 weeks...

I find it amazing there are original engine photos of such a rare car. I love it. It brings more peace of mind seeing a 100% original example rather then trying to guess what it did or didnt have.

Sourced this original and correct for the car P/S pump and dated cooler from Rocket Restorations.

The Prototype/Pilot 6BBL GT had one, so mine will as well!

Scored these original H/D shocks with Chrysler Pentastar logo.

They were on an 70 Challenger 6BBL R/T S/E 4-spd shaker car that was parked in early 80’s. They were a common “upgrade” for racers in the 70’s.

Going on the car!

Original Data Tag. Preserved after cleaning/removing the “POR 15” off of it and soaking it in an acid bath and, lightly, ever so gently removing the “active” oxidation by hand, which POR 15 does not do, which is why it’s a useless product.

Then I Parkerized it in phosphoric acid, then hot wax coated it. It’s fine until it gets paint.

Before I preserved it you could not read the inspection codes or a lot of the option/build codes on the front. Now it’s difficult but they can all be seen.

Dan Corley went through monumental efforts to get this tag back after it was taken/stolen from the car in the junk yard in Georgia. Dan is a “tag guy” and they are really important to him, and that’s why the car has its’ original tag now.

I’ll let Dan tell the story if he wants to.

Is that cooler/hose setup C-body specific or is B/E-body parts the same? Never seen another Fusy C-body with the steering cooler besides the magazine car. Which makes me wonder if they had put a 3.55 gear diff in the car?!

Love the look of them under the hood!!

PS Cooler was often seen on police cars. I've never seen them on anything else.

Power steering coolers were added by the factory with “gears” or an axle package.

The pilot SFGT 6BBL had a power steering cooler, I don’t know if the pilot car had a axle package or not.

My P/S cooler is the same plumbing as the pilot, and appears to be the same unit as an B/E body.

I believe P/S coolers were first fitted to C-bodies in 1964/65.

I've seen them on many later '74-'78 cop cars. But I cant ever recall seeing a '69-'73 C-body cop car with one.

IIRC the only C-bodys to get 3.55 gears were /6 3 speed manual cars (optional with 318 3 speed) or in some /6-318 wagons.
