Cam selection for a 66 383

really the more cam lift the better lift helps at all rpms it is the big duration that hurts bottom end.

I was thinking this too. I was thinking the next step down the 21-223-4
Nick had 400hp with that cam with 906 heads. I would expect the shop will blend the bowl after putting 1.74 in.
Should I be looking for 452's? I'd like to keep that closed chamber. If I could get 374 to 400 I'd be happy. Is that not gonna happen with 516? I have a street dominator to put on and was thinking a 750 of some sort. that thumper carp Nick was using looked nice.

I would hope I could use a bigger cam than a 340 did

I'm wondering what pushrods I would need. I will be using stock heads and rockers. With the newer 68 and up lifters, I know I need a ball on each end but does the comp cam have a lower base circle?

Since I left the assembly of my engine to my machinist, I don't know the answer to your question. I would suggest you call COMP and ask them.

1 thing to remember about dyno results is that 90% of them don't show #s below 3000 rpm.
That's where you'll spend 90% of your drive time.
So that 400hp will surely be a bit soggy in a C-body, unless you install a higher-stall converter and some gears?

Here's something I saw recently from @Ripinator. He has a 440 with -516s, so your 383 with the same heads will sound a little more aggressive.

I'm a manic so it will be living over 3000 but yes I plan on gears and a stall but I have a coarse input and old style flexplate pattern so its not that easy. I'll need everything and hopefully the hole in the crank is big enough
