Cbody Bob's 1966 Chrysler 300 coupe

So I flushed the tank out again today, I have been using a gallon of Vinegar each time and sitting the tank up on one end, then the next time changing it to the other end etc, each time replacing the gallon of vinegar. This last week I had the tank upside down soaking the inside top of the tank. Each time i have done this I have washed out the rust scale that came off after draining the vinegar and each time there has been large amounts. If you have a look at the pic you will see what I mean. The vinegar doesn't dissolve the rust but makes it separate from the unrusted steel leaving a grey metal etched surface.
I am currently soaking the filler region of the tank but once that is done i will take some more internal pics for all to see how it went.

I hope this works out for you without ending up with a 30 GA steel fuel tank. :p

One thing to keep in mind is that vinegar has a tendency to dissolve parts made with zinc. What will you use to recoat the inside of the tank once you have taken care of the rust?

I will be using Por15 Fuel tank sealer,

Okay cut the rear fenderwell corner extensions out today and made up some new ones with ribs. Check the pics.

Welded the extension pieces in and also gooped them up like factory, I ran out of goop though and will have to buy another tube. Damned stuff is $15 a pop for an 11oz tube! Anyone know where I can get seam sealer cheaper?
I will hold off on priming them till the weather is a bit better.

Looks good Gary. Is that it for trunk rust issues ?
Basically yes, I have one small hole to do that I will look closer at tomorrow before I decide how to tackle it, will let you know. Supposed to be good weather tomorrow so I'm hoping I can finish the tank and seal it. Will get pics after the final flush.

You are extremely talented!

hey bob , been setting up an engine build with a bud that owns a cam grinding service . he runs with some of the auto industry big wigs . and according to him vw is talking with fiat/chrysler/dodge/jeep about the whole ball of wax , less fiat of course . keep everything as is , just vw run management . just like the other buy outs . he told me that fiat just want nation wide sales dealers for their line of fiats and plenty of inventory to sell off and not replace . so lets see , maybe some of the dealers will sale vw's line up and maybe parts quality improvement .

VW & Chrysler have been flirting for a couple years now. That Diesel emmisions thing likely killed any future colapration. (Chrysler makes the VW mini van) I use to have a couple of VW dealers. They are a different crowd. LOL They think they have the worlds greatest car. And they don't !

It is thick, but brushed on and a little easier to use than pushing out of a tube. Cost is about the same but I imagine you could get a few more miles out of it. I've been told by the E body guys that this is identical to OEM. Oh, and while applying, use a respirator.:wideyed:

I sold 3M products in the parts store & yes back then anyway their Brushable seam sealer was high quality & was said to be OEM. Sold more caulking tubes than qrts however. These where body shops I dealt with so a lot of panel replacement & they liked the caulking better for what ever reason

Okay, primered the patches today, looks 100% on what it did. I also did the final clean out of the gas tank. I did however run into a problem. Once I had got the tank fully flushed of all rust scale I treated it with Rustoleum rust dissolver which is supposed to put a protective coating on the surface of the metal. I did this as per instructions and flushed that out too. But once dry i looked into the tank and found the whole think had flash rust all over it. I wasn't happy as the product stated it would not let this happen. Anyway I started to do some research on a few forums dealing with restorations and came across a couple of threads talking about how POR15 tank sealer is a very poor product. I have now decided to not use it at all.
So now I have two options, I can leave the internal tank as is and gas it up, the thing should always have about half a tank of gas in it. Will this present any real problems? Or should I spring for "Rust Kote" which is the product that radiator shops use for sealing gas tanks against further rust?

Okay, I put the red Kote in the gas tank and sloshed it about, I can tell you right now, this stuff is toxic! I worked out real fast the fumes given off were MEK which is a cancer causing agent so I recommend using gloves, respirator and goggles! I was doing my best to look in the tank which sloshing it around and it burns the eyes, so be careful. Also I had a slight cut on the back of my hand and I found it started stinging, not from direct contact but whenever i had my hand close to the opening, the fumes was causing it.
So I did my best to coat the inside of the tank and will double check it tomorrow once it is mostly dry, fingers crossed I got it all over the inside. This stuff goes off quick, it was turning thick fast what little was left in the can after i emptied it into the tank. Will update tomorrow, cheers!
