Center section swap issues

I'm not sure I would put a lot of effort into swapping an unknown cone type SG especially given everything that is FUBAR on it. Unless you can verify that all the bearings and gears are new, I would assume whoever built that thing to begin with just threw together a bunch of used junk laying around the shop and sent it.

If there is a way to measure the cones to see if there is anything to work with I guess you could do it but they aren't rebuildable if they are shot.

Your right. I would not buy a cone sure grip period, but they are still popular and switching it over is very basic. They almost never spin both wheels if your steering is not straight when you stand on it, but then again that was their purpose was to not bring the rear end around in the snow or rain.
Pretty safe to say that unless it is brand new it's about 50% wore out.

So wound up bringing the center section to a shop. Turned out the crush sleeve wasn't nearly crushed enough. Replaced the pinion bearing out of an abundance of caution since I did put a few miles on it. All is good now. No strange noises or chirping and the cone style sure grip worked very well. Lesson learned.

Greetings all. I have a 61 Newport with the factory open diff, 3:23 gears and a manual A745 3 speed transmission. I have installed 15" rims. I am looking at installing an aftermarket suregrip, and seek input as to types, manufacturers and pros/cons, experiences and pitfalls. I do have other pumpkins which are also open, have 3.9's and 3.55's, and I am not looking at using those ratios. I have heard rumblings of the need to shave axle length for an aftermarket suregrip install. I look forward to your pearls of wisdom. Thanks. Jim

Dr Diff. One stop shopping and will sell you what you need, not what he wants to sell you. He can tell you exactly what you do or don't need to do.
