Everything that has been said - plus a heat gun or hd hair drier helps. Temporarily install the rear seat and mark a chalk line where the base crosses the floor, the carpet must extend that far. Sit in the back seat and look at the firewall showing under the dash, make another chalk line. If possible cover this line as well. The only real trick spot is at the outboard corners of the rear bench. There is a triangular spot that you will probably need to sew in a piece of scrap carpet. Try to end up with a couple pieces of scrap big enough for the sides of the console (if you have one). I don't remember if your car has a console/floor shift.

Some pics of some rear side panel work. I removed the loose rust from the back, treated with phosphoric acid, painted with Rustoleum rusty metal primer, reglued the vinyl edges to the metal, washed the vinyl with 303 multi-surface cleaner, and wiped down with 303 aerospace protectant. It looks much better but there are some stains/rub marks where I think the seat makes contact. (The one on the right in the second to last picture has not been washed yet.) There are also some holes in the armrest. Is there a way to repair those that doesn't look worse than the holes?

I'd maybe sand the rough spots down and the use SEM dye to refinish the whole surface. Holes can be patched with epoxy putty. It remains flexible and should stay put provided you don't flex it too much.

Thanks, I'll look into those products. Have you used the dyes before? Does it change how you maintain the surface?

Yes. It's taped into the harness and then one of the metal tabs that are spot welded to the body clip through the square hole.

Is there a way to repair those that doesn't look worse than the holes?

There are some ways to do it, but the difficulty is matching the color when you are done. I contacted SEM about color matching and they will do it if you send them a sample. Dupont also has a line of vinyl colors that a large paint shop should be able to mix. I never looked into that.

I ended up using an off the shelf color. So much of my interior had been either replaced or redyed over the years that it didn't matter and I went with a lighter color that I liked better.

There may be some folks around your area that do interior patching for used car dealers. They might be worth looking into.

Can Duplicolor primer sealer be used as the topcoat? I know some primers absorb water, but this says it seals out moisture. I'm thinking about putting the carpet on it instead of adding a topcoat.

Also, I'm about ready to order carpet from Trim Parts. My carpet had a thick, fibrous padding. They offer a jute padding, which seems different than the original, but is that what I should get? Does it go everywhere the carpet goes, or just in places? Mine was falling apart and moldy and came out in pieces. I couldn't really save it or take pics for reference.

I used it as well. Kinda work but the heat is a PIA. Nice to see there are kits without heat.

I would check with Duplicolor to see if you can, but I would use a topcoat. When I think sealer I believe it wont allow anything to bleed into the paint.

personaly l would go with a good 2k primer..you wont regret it..local paint shops can make up spray cans for ease of use..cost tad more but the 2k is a great primer...had my 91 gmc sittin in primer for 6-7 years,,,good stuff

FWIW, I would always topcoat any primer. At this point, I don't think it has saved time and the money should be small too. If you paint it now, you won't have to second guess about it later.

Agree. I mean, it's going to cost you $22 to have your local paint shop mix up a can of correct single stage paint. After all that work, why would you want to risk it rusting again? There's saving money and there's not saving money, if you know what I mean.

Thx, that's why I asked. I obviously don't want to lose all the work to save a few bucks and a few hours. But if the primer/sealer acts as a top coat, then I wouldn't lose the work. I figure it will be about $100 for spray cans of topcoat in the correct color, but perhaps they can put it in a can for $22 and I can brush it on. I seem to recall that when I asked the paint shop about that, they said it doesn't work well when applied that way. I'm going to the paint shop today to get more seam sealer so I will ask these questions. I'm on a pretty tight budget and am about to spring for carpet, so that is why I am even considering this.

If you don't care about the color and are that tight on money, just get some Rustoleum or some other cheap paint then. Better than just primer.
