Cool "Car Art" Illustrations

Back when I was in grade school, I really liked the photo art ads, rather than the drawn art ads. In many of the Buick drawn art ads, the proportions were carefully altered for more length, but the various perspectives were still there, so it all looked good.

There were two guys who did the Pontiac ads. As I recall reading, they were in different parts of the country and worked independently of each other, typically. When I read that article, I got a very new perspective of that ad series. Details were fantastic! As mentioned, you WANTED to be that guy in THAT Pontiac!

I remember the interview with the late Art Fitzpatrick (the AF part of the AF/VK artists doing the GM ads from around 59-72) who died around 2015 in his mid 90s in Collectible Automobile Magazine. Van Kaufman was already dead for a Long time then, he originally came from the Disney Studios.
There actually was some committee set up during the early Wide Track Pontiac drawn ads that wanted to investigate foul Play due to These idealized proportions compared to photography. IIRC Art Fitzpatrick himself rebutted These Claims with some prepared photographs that were done with different objectives having the same effect to the cars' appearance.

The asignment with GM ended around 1972 with a series of ads done for German GM branch of Opel. According to Art Fitzpatrick the contract was mostly killed off due to costs, but I guess they were also considered no more up to date. These designs were done under the tenure of Charles M. "Chuck" Jordan, who brought some Italian style to the lines, going a bit away from earlier years that were very US-inspired. Just to get Carsten moaning again, a few pics of These cars. :)

I have this photo. I worked in Europe in mid-1990's and until I learned where this was I had hoped to see this place.

Its Dubrovnik .. Yugoslavia at the time of this illustration. Croatia now. The car is a '72 Opel Commodore GS.

I happen to own a 71 GS from the previous Generation in typical US GM cokebottle design.
Don't know where I read it but thaDubrovnik is what I remember as well, might even be mentioned in the catalog. An old School mate of mine just called in last week as he got a set of catalogs of this series from the estate of a friend to give it away to me. Didn't have the oppurtunity to pick them up for the moment.

From www.Plan59.com . . . the Chryslers seem to be pretty much in perspective, but some of the GM cars seem to have a longer front wheel-to-door dimension, plus a bit longer front door, when compared to others.

More from the Plant59 website . . . sometimes, the "perspective" can vary with actual camera angle as well as certain enhancements to the sizing of the drawn art.

cannot find a real car that looks like this illustration (especially the grille). Anyway, all the skiers are making car-related comments about "George's" sled.
