I just came back from a 10 mile trip, parked the car in a parking lot to check timing and so on, I turn the key and the starter turns veeeery slow and then stops. Dosent even kick out of gear, just cant spin the motor.

The car is charging fine when i drive it, according to the measurements and the ammeter. I have also recently put a new voltage regulator in which works juat fine.

I now measure 11.95 volt on the year old battery. I think this is because i tried starting it a bunch of times.

Is this a sign of a dying starter? How easy is it to replace that thing?

Oh yeah, starting up the engine when totally cold is no problem, turns over and then just roars.

What a darn fiddleshow trying to change the starter from the top. I just installed a 95 ram 1500 starter and holly crap does that thing turn the engine over. Unfortunately the cool chrysler sound is gone now :(

So far it seems to crank the engine even when warm, did a little drive, stoped, did my timing adjustment ect... started fine every time. Now, could it be that an old worn out starter somehow internally drains the battery or has some sort of parasitic drain on the system? I feel like the car idles way smoother now too and the ammeter isnt twitching as much in idle!?

When you did your timing adjustment did you add timing? More timing smooths out the idle until you get too much and the engine starts kicking. The starter doesn't make any difference because it's not engaged

I actually retarded a couple degrees, that was my initial thought anyways before the starter quit on me. It wasnt kicking even with the 22° initial i ran for over a year now. It was supposed to be a test cause the old starter woukd spin the engine, then stop for a brief second and grunt before it started, like it had a hard time no matter how many ° initial I had set. New starter spi s it like nothing, even with the 22° timing I have to run...
