I've done it before as well. I didn't grind any areas that could not be seen though. Then I smoothered the area with Por rust coating.

Been doing a little welding on the outer wheel house. Replacing steel. damn, does this take a long time, but it's coming good.

I finished the wheel house welding, well cut out rust a re welded. I sprayed with epoxy primer. Now I have to cut it in to my car. Also cut out pieces of the fender I will be welding in. And, I did find more rust on the passenger side.
