My wife had been working some long hours, it was Mother's Day, needed to get away from the 6 year old and I was in the dog house for almost three weeks so I told my wife we were going down to Monterey for the weekend. Haven't been down there since 2004 while my first time was 1970. So along with learning how to deal with an upset Filipina I have also come to the conclusion that California just isn't that much fun anymore. Simply too damn many people here that all the joy of a road trip has been erased. The trip home, of 125 miles, took 3 hours because of bumper to bumper traffic on a two lane stretch of highway that was empty in 1970. To think that I was thinking of taking one of the older cars down next time because I got miss led by the fact that the early morning drive was a breeze. One still has to get home and that was enough to make me stay away from going south.

Anyway we wandered the 6 mile trail through Point Lobos before heading back late afternoon to check in. Spent 13 hours in the room with her and will now have to go into hibernation for awhile. Sunday was a Cannery Row walk and then take a drive along the famous 17 Mile Drive through Pebble Beach. After that it was the return trip to hell. Yet, while doing the drive, I passed by a large parking lot hidden back in the trees. and my eye caught a quick glimpse. Hit the brakes, made a U turn and headed into the parking lot which was the employee lot for Spanish Bay. Absolutely huge lot if you ask me. Drove to where I saw my target and here she is a daily driver. What my eye caught was just the driver's side headlight between the pines as you can see the road in the second picture. By the way I think the car is slammed.

So your saying the coast highway from LA north isn't a fun and relaxing ride any more....? I did it in 95 and it was great. It's on our list of things to do in the next couple years.

When they turn the spigot off, you're all going to move anyway.
Heartland of Florida is gorgeous for country road driving, btw.

I left SoCal in '61 and their waz too many warm bodyz there even then. 'Course when I took driverz training there in '54 there waz no I-5 but what waz there waz still a 3 lane death trap from San Juan Capistrano up past El Toro to Santa Anna. Any ah you ole' guyz remember those 3 lanerz? Thank You for the improvementz Dwight D. Ike Ike

There is a reason so many warm bodies are out here. I never realized what the weather meant until I moved to Michigan many years ago to work for Chrysler. I hated the winter so much - you waste half your life dealing with the cold and gloom for so much of the year, and then you can't drive a nice car for half the year either. I couldn't wait to get back to California - traffic and all. Glad I did. Cold and rust isn't for me at least. Here is winter last year out here at my garages. Los Angeles area and a too cold 60F.

Steve, how many miles do you drive in LA with your nice cars:blob1:

Now how did I know to expect that question from you!? When I lived in Michigan, I had my fist car with me, which was my 1962 Chrysler 300 and I also had my 1970 Chrysler 300. I normally would drive my 70 300 to work and back during the nice months. In the winter, though, I bought a "beater" 1965 Plymouth Fury sedan and used it as my "salt car". Best decision I ever made. My two other cars came back with me. But the Fury stayed behind. Even today, I would not drive my "nice cars" in traffic out here. I had my Cuda out for a drive two weeks ago though, if that helps a little! :steering:

I'll probably drive from the crack off dawn and pit stop when the traffic is bumper to bumper....I won't be in any hurry during my lap around North America.

I would stay away from Highway 1 between San Luis Obispo all the way north to Monterey most all weekends. Naturally most want to drive it when the weather is nice rather than rain which I did once in December 1992 when it was raining. Now the only way I would drive it is during the week and probably not during the summer months when school is out. That means March, April, May, late September and October. When we get rain it is usually between November to January instead of the normal November to April in the past.

I am just friendly pushing you my friend.
All your cars are willingly waiting to be driven.
So you have lots to do.

Your so right about that. I was born and raised in Detroit and the surrounding area. I left in 95 and it was the winter weather that was the decision maker. It just flat out sucks for almost 6 months of the year. Great for a model train hobby, not so good for car guys who like to drive. The winter beater was mandatory.
Michigan has a lot to offer, lots of natural beauty there, just not enough time to enjoy it all.

I ended up here in Alabama, nice, but still not far enough south.
