What's the best (save) way to connect the hoist with the engine?

Should I buy a lift plate or a chain (with or without the tilter)

That's the hoist I bought:

I have never used the plate that bolts to the carb flange. I bolt to the heads normally. I use the tilter I find they are useful to adjust how the engine is going in.

I would have used the intake bolts (green). :O

Ok, the head bolts then. Which ones? I've read about front and rear of opposite sides (purple) or the center ones (red)!?

I've always used the intake bolts cross corner from each other when pulling just the engine out but agree with MrC about using a leveler upon install. In other words if you're going to buy the leveler than use it all the time as you can always benefit from the added flexibility.

Can you pull a 440 with the transmission still attached. My concerns are about weight of the combo, extending the arm out losing lifting power, and the height needed to clear the front end of the car. I've only done this kind of pull before with small blocks before. What do you guys think? Any ideas or helpful tips? Thanks in advance.

It's a little tricky, but it can be done. Just don't do it in the mud. BTW, I used the intake bolts, but would have liked that leveler contraption. Lowering and re-adjusting the chains was a pain.

The weight of a 440/727 combo is ~670lbs (~300kg). The hoist is good for 500-2000kg depending on the length of the arm and the leveler is good for up to 900kg! So the weight should be no problem!
On my car, the frontend is stripped to the frame, but even if not, the hoist could lift the engine up to 3m (-~1/2m for the leveler and the chain).

I will share my experiance afterwards!

The leveler looks like a great idea but requires more headroom and I don't have that. The carb plate works well, the problem I have with the chain is with the install.
I drop my engine without the transmission and using the chain causes the engine to tilt diagonally which may cause problems getting things in place.

With the front end off pulling the engine/trans would be a piece of cake. I have always just pulled the hood, radiator, shrouds, accessories, wiring etc., unbolt everything, and pull the engine up and out some, transmission tail down. Then have some strong friends help lift the transmission tail over the front of the car and pull the hoist back. The weight doesn't seem as much as I expected. The older Chryslers seem to have plenty of play room in the engine bay.

'James- I loved your photos. I thought I was the only person in the world who ever had to use 'ply-crete' under a hoist.

Just make sure you have the right dolly. Getting it out of the back yard was also a challenge.

I've not seen it mentioned here but once now but I'm assuming you guyz all pull the hood like I do? One thing I did with my leveler that I'd suggest that any body should do that haz one or is thinking of getting one is the S**T CAN that crank handle and weld BOTH NUTZ ON BOTH ENDZ of that threaded rod and use your impact gun with the appropriate size impact socket and alwayz point the short protruding end toward the fire wall. You have no idea how fast you can tilt the engine WITH the trans using the impact. You only have to use it like that once to know you've done the right thing, Jer

I was wondering about that. The handle does look kind of flimsy and with 750+ lbs hanging on the end it can't be easy to turn.

I've used both, usually the chain cause I have plenty. I have that leveler (came with my hoist) but have never used it because I can't take off a hood by myself.

Vdk, you should have no problem with the front end torn down, I'm jealous that I couldn't do that.

Yep, I have the front end off the car and enought head room. Should be a piece of cake but I've never done something like this before. We will see! There is a lot of rust on the bolts...
