I'm so friggin pissed off right now I could scream!! Took the car to check the timing and to check the distributor advance springs at my buddy's house, we get it tuned and take it out,..I bang second car comes up to about 5400 and just runs out of fuel. We get the car back to the house (barley) and find I have zero fuel pressure. So I pull the new front filter off and we pour the fuel left in it into a can to find it looks like tan mud, but I could blow through the filter. Go to the back of the car and pull the rear filter off and find the same thing. I try to blow through the fuel line to the tank and I can't blow thought it. We break out the air compressor to blow out the fuel line to the tank and it finally clears. With it clear the fuel is running out of the line pretty good now, so we pour some into a can and it looks like mud. The fuel tank is destroyed I would guess inside. I just put in $40 worth of Ultra in it, Startron, and a can of 104 too. I'm glad I have 2 filters on the car. I won't start it again until I get a new tank. Any suggestions on getting a new fuel tank or anyone have another suggestion? I'm wondering if the the gas I just got was bad? Not a happy camper at the moment.

yank the tank. flush the **** out of it including the fuel line from the tank up to the carb. look inside the tank and if it looks clean after all the flushing you should be good to go. keep changing filters. they are cheap.

Empty the tank and start from there.
Im headed to Georgia next week to get quarters off of a 66 that was hit in front, if you need another tank.

Sorry about the rant last night, but I was pissed the F off. Thanks for the information. I know it's just a matter of dropping the tank and looking at it inside to see what's going on, but like I said, I just spent over 50 bucks to gas it up and all that fuel and additives are wasted. One way to look at it,.. it happened at my buds house and not an hour away at the track. 65Fury440,..PM sent......

If you need tank try these guys...it shows tanks available up to 1965 and then from 1967 on. I don't know why they don't list one for 1966. Call them, I'm sure they can help if you need a tank.

I feel if you're dropping the tank, a new replacement is available, it's a waste of time dealing with the old one....

Oh I hear ya, I'm not putting it back in the car. It doesn't look that bad inside though, but there is a lot of rust sediment in the tank. I could flush it and I'm sure it would be fine, but I think a new one is the way to go or go ahead and put in a fuel cell. Does anyone know what the capacity is for these tanks? 20..25 gallons? Take a look at these pictures!! You see the rubber line that is looped to the tank. Isn't that the vent line? Do I need this hooked up in some other way or does anyone know where it should go other than looped or should I just leave it the way it is? Also look like it needs a new float/sender..!! Pretty rusty looking, but it works. The picture of the blue pan is what gas was left in the tank. Look at the dirt that came out of the tank. Holy crap!!! I guess this all happened because the car sat for almost a year with barley any fuel the the tank.

Hmmmm,,looks like I cant locate a new fuel tank. Tried the link above and also Summit. They don't carry a 66 tank!? Looks I'll be flushing the one I have. Also the price of these tanks is expensive. I could go with a fuel cell.

You got the tank out now...I'd grab some small lengths of 5/16 chain and drop them inside. Then put on some ear and eye protection and start shaking. This will clean out the inside of your tank. Then rinse and re-install. I too run at least 2 filters....cheap and easy to replace.

The rust in your tank was probably already there...but with all the Ethanol in the fuel these days it can promote moisture build up and rust out parts, if left sitting for too long with out a good fuel stabilizer.

I was looking at it and it really isn't that bad inside. I think you are right about Ethanol in the fuel that caused this to happen from sitting for close to a year without fuel stabilizer. I will use the chain method and get myself a new sender. Be a good time to paint the tank too. I will also blow out the fuel line to the front of the car before installing two new filters. The sending unit should have a sock on it,..right? There is no sign of it inside the tank??.

After you finally get the tank sorted out, make sure you run one ounce of marine 2-cycle oil with TC-W3 additive to every five gallons of gas. This will help counteract the tendency for rust formation and corrosion in the fuel system. It will also keep lubricated every component in the system, including the valves in the engine. Finally, it will lubricate the ring pack on your pistons, which improves compression, and therefore, engine smoothness and mileage.

You can get marine 2-cycle oil by the gallon or quart at WalMart.

I've been running this stuff in every vehicle we own for the last three years, and I can testify that it really works. Also, I should add that my panhead motorcycle and the wife's Lincoln Town Car really like it.

Thanks I will give it a shot.

I've been adding 2-cycle oil and fuel stabilizer to the gas in my Newport's tank every Autumn when I store her over the winter. Yeah, it helps prevent rust from forming, helps keep the sending unit float from sticking and gives the engine's cylinders an extra bit of lubrication first start-up in the Spring. I don't add it any other time though. I wouldn't recommend doing this to any vehicle that has a cat or cats in the exhaust system. :)

The 2-cycle oil WILL NOT affect the cats. Like I said, I've been running it for over three years with NO ill-effects. I run it ALL the time in every vehicle.

Well, all I can say is you're a braver man than I am.:laughing4: I wouldn't have added it to the gas in my '05 which, of course, has a cat. But then, since it's my daily driver, I don't store it so it doesn't sit for long periods anyway. All of my trouble with my Newport came from the fact that it sat from 1998 to 2008 without being driven. She went from 2001 to 2008 without the engine even being started. Anyway, I've been using the 2-cycle oil and fuel stabilizer in her every winter since 2008 and have had no problems since. When I finally get my truck ready to run I will do the same. It hasn't been driven since 1996 and the engine hasn't been started since 2002. There's no gas in it's tank anymore. I haven't looked in it's tank, but I'm expecting the worst. If need be, I'll replace the tank or have it lined, depending which is more economical. Replacement tanks for F-series trucks are a lot less expensive than replacement tanks for C-bodies.
I had my Newport's tank lined by one of the local rad shops five years ago. They used some red spray-in stuff. I haven't had any problems since, even with ten percent ethanol in the gas. So yeah, relining your tank is one option. :)

Use the two cycle oil as well with my old cars, what ratio you guys mix it, I add very little abt. 1:150

I am also in the market for a 66 fuel tank. I read somewhere recently that a 68-70 B Body tank will work on a 66 Fury. 19 gallon. Haven't been able to confirm that though.
