Fuselage - Drums to Disc Brake Conversion

In my instructions I suggested in Step #4 to place a jack under the control arm and jack it up an additional 4" or so - it's to help relieve the pressure of the tortion bar to make removal of the old spindle and installation of the disc spindle easier.
Ok. Will do...

He didn't have anything under there. I was afraid he would start unbolting it without either backing the torsion bar off or no jack stand.

That was a GOOD CALL Big_John! After you commented I too noticed he didn't have anything under the control arm. Again good thing you caught that othewise Gary's next msg would have been, "WTF! - OUCH!!" SAFETY FIRST!!

Hahaha....yes I do have a jack under the LCA also (thanks!)....I'm backing the four bolts out of the front of it....good thing I have impact wrench. Should I bleed the brake fluid out of the system before totally removing this?

I assume this pin goes straight through the bolt ....

Yes, that's the cotter pin. Use a pair of dikes (cutters) to grab the head of the pin (bottom side from your photo) and pull it out.... or grab the head of the pin and rock it out with the dikes against the nut.

Yes, sir.
The cotter pin is to prevent the castle nut from backing off.

Now that I think about it the '73 disc setups didn't come with castle nuts and bolts with holes through them for the cotter key. My setup came intact and that's the way it was... Gary, if you didn't get any bolts with your spindles you can probably use the old bolts and castle nuts providing the bolts are long enough. I don't recall off-hand, but I think the disc spindles are a little thicker than the drum spindles, but the bolts should work fine.

Ok ThANKS!! getting through this. Took all day JUST to get off one drum brake...

now you have to teach him how to make a tool from an upper return spring to go in through the adjuster hole and release the adjuster lever. he'll be able to actually back-off the adjusters next time plus every rear brake job from here to forever. great thread. live blogging a disc brake conversion!

You know... You've just committed to taking a running car apart without the new parts in hand.

That can get you into trouble.

Guys I was just thinking.... Gary did say he got a '73 spindle & C-brackets. Hopefully he did and his C-brackets are the pin & NOT slider type.

I was told they are coming with the brackets; but i wasnt aware of any pin vs slider detail. Great.

The pin type are sought after from Cordobas for the large brake conversion on 68 - 70 B bodies for instance (see Disc-o-tech). I don't know about C bodies but presume they are too. Both pin and slider will work with correct parts
