Hey ya'll....buddy texted me earlier about his '65 Fury. 318 poly 4spd. He got it a couple months ago and went to check the timing today says its been running hot. Anyway....hooked the clamp up to no.1 plug wire (driver's side front) and couldn't find the mark. After a while looked under the car and there it was opposite where it should be. Hooked the clamp to no. 2 plug wire (passenger side front) and the timing mark was where it should be. What's that mean and how do you fix???

PS....he says it starts right up and runs great just gets to the hot line at high speeds....

A 65 318 should have the timing mark on the passenger side, you would still hook up to the number 1 (driver side).

Your timing is probably off.

Yeah the marks are where they should be bolted to the motor but when it's running and the timing light is hooked up to no. 1 plug wire, the groove on the balancer is under the car driver's side.... Timing light hooked up to no. 2 plug wire and the groove is around where it should be.....

I have had problems with the harmonic balancer in the past. The rubber bond between the inner and outer components let go and the parts spin. This causes the marks to be off. Have him put number one cylinder at TDC (on firing stroke) and see if the marks line up.

He said he thinks the dude he got it from said he put a timing chain/sprockets on. Is it possible he put the balancer on backwards?

It is possible that the balancer was replaced with a later one.

I'd find TDC (number 1) and mark the balancer where it should be and then check the timing.

No, it is keyed. But if they felt they needed to replace it they may have got the wrong one.

Alan

Me too but he couldn't find TDC from his *** or a hole in the ground. Good guy but prolly shouldn't own tools.

Yeah it's keyed at the mark right? Man this has me scratching my head......

Ok.....now I don't feel so dumb. Nobody can figure this riddle out, right? Why would a good running car have the timing mark on the balancer exact opposite from where it should be on the motor? And why would no.2 cylinder be in the ball park if firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2?

There is no riddle. The rubber in the harmonic balancer has deteriorated and the outside ring has slipped.

As has been said... Find TDC of number one and mark the balancer. Check and set timing and then find another balancer or have that one rebuilt.

I'd pull the #1 plug and put my thumb over the hole. When the piston comes up to the point of where there is no compression and starts to suck your thumb down to the hole rather than blowing it off, you are close to TDC.

Nah it didn't slip. He tried to muscle it and didn't budge. How would you hold your thumb over no. 1 hole and turn the motor at the same time? Without the whistle also? And how do you rebuild a harmonic balancer?

Most of us know exactly what to do as a fix, but I'm asking if anyone can explain what's going on? Anyone?

It slipped... If you could move it by hand the ring would have fallen off by now.

Remote starter button hooked to the starter relay is one way to turn it over... I use an old screwdriver myself to jump the relay, but YMMV.

Here's one place that does rebuilding. There are others, but I have heard these guys do a good job.

Not slipping because that's what I thought initially. Sent me a video and it's steady at 4500 RPMs......under the car......

So......basically, not one single person on here can troubleshoot a basic timing problem? That's really sad. It's like Mopar facebook around here for god's sake

Like a game to hear one single answer to the most basic of questions!! lol Is there anyone that turns a wrench on here anymore?
