Having some trouble with my 5.2 Magnum - Lifters

I haven’t driven it much for 5 1/2 years. Haven’t needed to and it’s had an ongoing battery discharge problem I put off. When I did drive it, short trips, I haven’t had any problems with it other than battery staying charged after sitting. Only thing is a slight clunk when going from park to gear right after starting so trans might have been low. I assumed it was a ujoint previously. It has 101K miles on it.

Well I’ve gotten around to it and have been doing some work on this 99 5.2 Magnum 4x4 Durango lately. Changed oil, new battery cable ends, charged up battery, pulled trans pan and installed Dorman pan with drain plug, new Mopar filter, and I used a Mopar gasket with metal insert. Sealed up good. Transmission and transfer case fluid EDIT NOT been changed previously.

It’s only supposed to require 4 QTs to refill trans after dropping pan, but I let it drain for about 3 days while busy with other stuff and I got about 5.5 plus qts collected/spilt/soaked up with paper towels. I have 6 QTs of ATF+4 back in. Still not up to full line on dipstick while running in neutral. Currently showing about a 1/4 inch on the stick in neutral but not really up to temp.

My next plan is to drop the skid plate so I can drain whatever is in the transfer case next, providing that doesn’t fight me to bad. It’s had a very slow drip for a long time so I don’t know what I’ll find in there. Perhaps some of the fluid I’ve added to the trans has migrated to the transfer case if seals are bad ??? Trans is pretty dry but transfer case has been leaking at both ends.

Anyway while I’ve been doing all this I developed a water pump noise that went from nothing, to something, to a hell of a racket in pretty short order. I drove it maybe 20 miles or less in a couple trips after changing trans fluid to get up to temp, then the water pump went south. Not leaking but making a lot of noise. Didn’t overheat on my test runs.

So trying to complete the trans fill to level I removed the serpentine belt so I didn’t wind up with a larger problem with the pump before I’m ready to deal with it. Not diving anymore just starting in neutral to add fluid gradually and checking level.

Next thing not long after removing the belt, the right/passenger side lifters started making noise. I used a Lisle mechanics stethoscope and it’s quite a bit louder on the passenger side. Drivers might be normal. The injectors sound a little noisy too but I’ve never put a scope on them before so I don’t know what normal is. maybe they are noisier because alternator isn’t alternating at present ? I have the battery fully charged btw.

Any ideas or suggestions on the trans taking so much fluid to refill or the onset of the lifters rattling? The lifters really have me worried.

Sorry for the long post but wanted to lay out as much pertinent info as I can.

Also I’m posting here because I know you guys as a collective have a lot of knowledge and are helpful. I’ve spent days researching other forums for 5.2/5.9 magnum vehicle info and haven’t been able to find anything that matches this board.
 
I forgot to add it’s holding 60 psi oil pressure at idle. It’s 30 degrees here too btw. I’m in a enclosed unheated garage.
 
Maybe the transmission level was low before you drained it.
Lifter rattle may be caused by varnish. Drop a pint of marvel mystery oil in it and give it some time on the road. Report back your findings.
 
I’ve been working under the hood off and on for about 2 weeks. Wasn’t there before water pump started acting up. Then the water pump grew noisy so I removed the belt and all normal. then after a while, a few starts and running to warm up and put trans through the gears to check trans fluid, suddenly it was noisy. I noticed it from inside the car when I first heard it.

Made me suspect pulling the belt had something to do with it but I can’t imagine what.

Perhaps you are correct that there was a lifter noise that just got a lot worse all of the sudden but it definitely wasn’t this loud and I really don’t think it was abnormal at all.

I was trying to diagnose charging problems so had it running a lot with a multimeter looking for a problem. Then got a Topdon and more checking battery / charging etc. and also running to check trans fill level. All that before the water pump or lifter sound.

You might still want to move forward and put in the marvel mystery oil and see what happens.

I’ll do that. Don’t want to drive it with the water pump like it is but could put it in and run it up to operating temp and see what happens. If the cam isn’t already hurt I’m nervous about it getting hurt. How much running could cause cam wear or is that unlikely as far as we know?

Sounds like injectors on the driver’s.
Something is off on the passenger side and it sounded like the alternator or maybe it’s the water pump that you mentioned.

The noise from the passenger side doesn’t sound like lifters to me. I would pop the passenger side valve cover and see what is inside.

Good to hear. Well sounds better than digging into lifters I think.

There is an odd sound that doesn’t sound like lifters around the front of the passenger head, that’s why I paused when moving around towards the pass side. It sounds like a steady tone like hum or tuning fork or something.

However the belt is off so the only thing turning is the crank pulley.

I think I will do that tomorrow.

P.S. we’re also hearing the exhaust in the background of course.

Since I’ll be taking valve cover(s) off any recommendations on gaskets / brand? Has anything like the excellent Mopar trans pans been developed?
 
Just finished getting the back lower nut/stud out. Rest are broken loose.

Pretty tough to get to. On break now lol
