Hello from Turboomni

I bet that before he O-ringed the block and all the other work, "tur-BOOM-nee" was a pretty accurate description of the car. :)

Welcome aboard, Turboomi. I've only been posting here a couple weeks, but I've been Moparin' since I was a teenager in the 70s.

Yeah you got that right!!. Blown head gaskets were/are a common occurrence with these slant fours especially when turbocharged. As a matter of fact the designer of the slant 6 also designed the 2.2 4 cylinder. I do admit it is a weird little car. I bet I could pop a wheelie in reverse Lol!!

Welcome from Mn! Great looking Omni. Like those little hot rods alot. I have a 69 fury 1 2dr 383 with a stick. As some of the guys have said before the parts for them are pretty tough to come by so yes find one as clean and complete as you can! Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thanks to all for the welcome . I have seen a few with a stick for sale. What is it like to drive a big block stick car? I have never driven one.

You're welcome! Always good to have another member. Its fun and love to see the look on people face when they look in my car and see the shifter sticking outta the floor. Can be a workout though with no power steering and a stick when parking! Lol.

Ahh yes ,,I had an old Jeep Wrangler stick with no power steering and rather big tires,,now I can relate. It just didnt have a big V8.

Well this spring I will start to seriously look for a 69 2 door fury. From what I understand the bell housings are not inter changeable on the 727 from small block to big block, as they are integral to the tranny,,is that correct? Also the K frame must be changed going from a small block or 6 cylinder going to a big block ,,is this also correct? Is a front disc brake upgrade and to power brakes a big deal? Parts are all available for everything I mention? For a car this big and being a hopefully be called a "muscle car era representative" this big boned gal is gonna need some serious power and lots of torque. So a 440 will be required in my opinion or are their other options like a supercharged 360 etc? All I know is this fury has to be a good bit faster in a straight line than my little Omni glhs . My Omni was a high 12 second car on street radials and at the end of the 1/4 mile and was going 113 mph in spite of a low 2.0 to 2.2 60 foot times.. Any and all thoughts would be really appreciated!

#1...YES #2...YES AGAIN #3...YES, If you wanna whoe az well az go, just do it right #4... A 440 can be made to have stupid power, don't mess with 360. Pick a pre-'72 block so you have a forged crank AND thick wall block. Just remember more power=more money. BTW I have a good friend lives just south of Cincinnati that haz ah '86 GLHS in the 9s and yes their iz ah cage in it. I like to watch him surprise most B+E Bodyz Guyz when they line up against him at Norwalk or where ever else he chooses to play that weekend. Go forth and spend, Jer

My 69 was a 6 cyl 3 on the tree car and the previous owner did the 383 swap and left the orig K frame and used mounts off a mid 80's dodge truck I think he said.

I cant even imagine being in an econobox Omni doing 9's. I have seen some real stupid fast fwd cars and it is amazing. I bet I have heard of this guy when I was a member of the Shelby Dodge Club. I guess I want to own both extremes,,about the largest Mopar with great straight line acceleration and their smallest that can really cut corners!
Thanks for your help.

Yea those GLH omnis can be really fast! A buddy has 4 of them and I think his quickest one is in the low 11 high 10's. The best part is it looks all orig and not really loud at all. Just cool little cars and hard to find anymore!

I built mine as I wanted to do autocross and track events but I work weekends so I never did it lol..

Haha, yea those pesky jobs sure get in the way of having fun! I think it would be fun to autocross. My son has had 2 5.0 mustang gt's a couple yrs ago and did that with each of them a few times and really enjoyed it. Sold his last one and bought a 440 68 sport satellite instead so no autocrossing in that! Lol.
