High torque mini-starter

Our Volvo eats up starters, had 3 replaced under guarantee already. :)

Makes it easier to get in and out around the exhaust pipe.

I think if you ever go to headers you have to go to the new high torque starter just to fit them on. Not that I am personally doing new headers, at least not any time in the near future. I never say never though.

No you shouldnt have to but dont expect to remove a starter without unbolting the header and raising the left side of the engine

Every time I think about how cool an A-body with a BB would be, I think of what you just described and reality hits me.

Unless you cut up the inner fenderwells and use fenderwell headers.

The Hooker headers I had tore up my starter with the heat they gave off. I am afraid of having headers again

UPDATE. Despite what the website claims, the stater does not fit. There's too much of an interference between the thermoplastic moulding around the copper lugs and the side of the block. Should have sent it back when I found the made in China sticker.....hard to but stuff made hear these days.

Monday they're getting it back.

I did just that when I bought wheel bearings for my brown 71. When I opened the boxes they had made in China on them. I took them back and found made in the states ones.

Yeah, I know. I was very tempted to do that. I should have. I learned a lesson -- but its so damn hard to find american made anymore. Now I gotta get back on my back and put the old one back on....and find another. Woo hoo.

Yes it is, I look at everything I buy to look for the flag and it isnt there. Hell, today I am happy to by made in Japan, just trying to avoid the China invasion, its damn near impossible.

Sandwich bags, gotta look most are made over seas. My wife just took a look at toothpaste and guess what, made in Mexico or distributed by "in the States" but it doesnt say "made in" which is a dead giveaway its not made here.

And to think they cant figure out how to fix it

Yeah its sad. I could just stay with the old starter but it's starting to hang up while cranking, I know its not the battery....880 ccA...fairly new. Might be the original from the factory some 40 yrs ago.

I have one here in the garage if you ever need it...... probably still in the "rebuild" box.

I know yours is far from stock and you like the idea of the upgrade however when I had the rebuild done on the 70 I had the original starter and alternator restored by a local shop, they did a nice job

Much oblige, I appreciate the offer, I gotta a spare for now. Yeah, I'm not a "stock" Nazi, but even I don't like the idea of a Chinese mopar starters---that's just not right. I got a couple pages open while typing.....Jegs, Summit, Mancini.....I'll be a little more careful this time..but its gonna be difficult. Even some of the RockAuto parts are not made here.

I am slowly changing to a mini-starter on all my cars - slant, SB, BB. The weight savings alone is worth the cost, plus the ease of installation, especially on my tightly packed SB early-A. Rebuilt $45 on ebay, though some say better to get a Mopar junkyard one, which I also did for small change, plus grabbed the wiring. Besides Dodge trucks until ~2000 (5.2 & 5.9L Magnum motors), try vans and Grand Cherokees.

UPDATE: After sending the stater back and arguing through email back and forth with the owners of the place I bought this thing from, they sent me a brand new one....for free, it can be reconfigured my adjusting the copper lugs the stater cable connects to so that it fit properly and there is absolutely no interference between it and the side of the block. It's a long story, and partially my own fault, but all in all it fits exactly the way a stock Chrysler starter motor would and fires up the 383 with almost no effort....in a flash. I barely turned the key on the stone cold motor and it flipped over like greased lighting, immediately........NICE. This one was made in China also. It is hard to find parts that are not made in China or Mexico these days. I got this part brand new - for nothing. I have mixed feelings about that, but the bottom line is I need a starter.
I may buy one of those heat shield wraps to put around it because the solenoid housing for this thing sits EX-tremely close to the exhaust manifold dump. It may make a difference, it may not but you can get one for 17 bucks from Jegs what the hell...cheap insurance if ya ask me.

Here's the mini stater (next to stock unit) before installation:

Here it is all tucked in and ready to go:

I also rigged up a stock-ish looking wiper fluid reservoir. The original one I have has a large crack in it. I was able to save the fluid pump so I bought a universal fluid reservoir from Jegs, drilled out the bottom and fitted the stock pump into it. I bought new vacuum tubing and now I have wiper fluid spray. The stock ones are hard to find and/or extremely expensive. If anyone has a used one that does not look like hell and your not asking a ton of cash for it--I'm listening.

I am glad things worked out for you, and you know where I am going with this...........................
