how rare is a 65 Monaco 426 4-speed???

FWIW- I spoke with Galen's office today regarding the '65 Monaco. There were (154) 426W with 4-speeds made. Now- how many are left & still complete ?? Then break it down by color (this one is black/black), etc. It's no wonder that you don't see any of these! I ordered the 62-65 production/option codes, part#'s, and casting# books, so if anyone needs info, I'll have them this week. ~B

There is no way to know absolutes with a Mopar. We can know 'about', 'around' or 'approximately' a production figure but due to the way the sales reports are generated, it is not possible to generate a definitive number known. Does that number include cars sold in Canada and Exports?

There is no way to know how many are left or complete of any car made or breakdown by color but it's a fun, and totally meaningless, exercise in futility to try and determine that number.

You don't see many for a reason....there weren't many made for a reason.

If you are eager for the white books to give you any answers to your questions, you may be disappointed. The 62-65 book (fourth edition) only lists total Monacos made for 1965. (~13,096 shipped for sale in the US). There is no breakdown by engine or transmission unless he has updated the book.

You have a cool and interesting car. Don't get too hung up on the numbers. It can take the fun out of it. Thanks for keeping us updated. Pics of the car and fender tag would be greatly appreciated. :)

yeah- I'm not much of a #'s guy, but it's kind of cool just to know. I'm a hot rodder- I can't leave them stock- must go FAST and be stock looking.
I'll get pics, etc. when I'm back over there by Sat.! Cheers

If it's not stock, then the original production numbers mean nothing as you changed the whole discussion.

Please consider that the best thing for this car may be someone that is willing to keep it stock.

One of 65 1970 Barracuda /6 three speed cars in sassy grass green means nothing if the car is now a purple hemi four speed clone.

If you're going to "hot rod" a very rare car, sell it to me. I have a very common car for you to get the need for speed out of your system.

Don't get me wrong- the Monaco won't have aftermarket junk- valve covers, chrome air cleaner, flex fans, racing seats, hood scoops, etc.- heck no! Here's a pic of my 68 Cuda, bone stock appearing, but 425+HP with solid internals. Of course the Monaco might need a little more due to the 4000# barge weight

beautiful cuda have anymore pictures? My dads friend is restoring a 69 cuda with a 383 4 speed.

One thing I learned over the years is that rarity alone has little to do with value.

I had a 67 Valiant with a 273/Auto one of maybe 700, its a Valiant, nobody cares.
Now it was one of the 50 or so Commando 273/4-speed cars it might be a different story.

Alan, well over 100,000+ units and only 700 273'/auto?.
Doesn't sound right.
I had a 67 Dart 273 and I remember a lot of 273 A-bodies.

The numbers I have for a 1967 Valiant-100 are about 1200 273/Auto and about 50 with a 4-speed, no note on 4-door vs 2-door
With the Signet there were about 3800 273/auto and about 80 4-speed

That is 2bbl, the Commando 273 was available with about 50 with auto and 50 with 4-speed (Valiant-100) and 160 auto and 80 4-speed on the Signet.

There were a lot more Darts (not counting the 273-2 or the 383)
Base Dart about 1300
Dart-270 about 10000
Dart-GT about 15000

Here is a pic of my Polara data plate. Positions circled.
As stated earlier, under the AB 80=426, 70=413(340HP), 71=413(360HP), 62=383
under D 3=4spd, 5=auto, 2=3spd HD, 1=3spd

other things to look for:
Radiator #2524989 should also have the 2 piece metal rad shroud.
machined pad on drivers side front of motor A 426 HP, date code stamping example 9 23=Sept. 23 1964, 2 17=Feb. 17,1965
All of the date codes on intake manifold, exhaust manifold, water pump housing etc. should be dated before the date code on the pad.
If the car was built in Delaware (4th digit of VIN=6, Newark) the data plate will be on the lower cowl driver side, if built in Detroit (4th digit of VIN=3, Detroit) it should be on the driver fender wheelhouse. This is an observation I have made over many years of looking at these cars, no documentation that this is correct.

what does this all mean? Nothing, numbers can be transposed or totally incorrect, remember humans built these cars and stamping was done by hand. No bar codes or computers to verify(not that these things make it any better). Also casting dates can be anywhere from a day to quite a few months earlier than the date code on the pad.

I would love to know the source of production numbers for these cars.

In my opinion, if you want decode answers on these pre 68 cars, David Wright from the old MML(Mopar Mailing List) is very good with them.
I do not know how to contact him, or if the MML still exists.(I have a twenty year old email address for him, but don't know if its valid. PM me if you want to try it)

here is a link to a decent decode page http://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/reference.html

I hope this helps with proper identification, if you buy the car and decide you don't want it, I would be interested in talking to you.
Regards, Jim
