how rare is a 65 Monaco 426 4-speed???

Sounds like a great ride if you can get the deal done, a customer of mine had a 65 sport fury 426 4-speed a few years ago, never saw the car in person only pic's, quarters were rough when I asked about it he wanted 8,000 said the motor was rebuilt. He sold it later never told me how much he got though

Well kids- I called back today on the Monaco, planted the seed & watered it :laughing4: Going to take another look at her on Monday evening and get the details. If all goes well & it's legit, I'll bring her home! Fingers crossed...stay tuned & have a great weekend! :eek:ccasion14:

Well, what is/was the outcome?

ok, just got back from the old timers place. Walking on eggshells trying not to sound pushy. The car is tucked back in the back of the pole shed, of course 2 flats, etc. He's pouring a concrete floor in front of it, so I couldn't roll it out into the light. Anyway- my POS camera isn't downloading to the computer now, BUT, they do show up in the screen. The engine most likely is the 426, having the chrome valve covers and air cleaner were there. She has power drums, PS.
The tag reads "99" under AB, then "351" under DEF, "882" under NPQ, "3" under V & "791" under XYZ. why would it be a 99, not 80 for 426? 99= standard cid engine 8 cyl.
Body is D42, trim is P4X and paint is BB1 (black).

Overall she's pretty solid with lower quarters needing patches, but not really any other rust through. The seats are not ripped at all, carpet is all good (hopefully not rotted underneath). All the trim is above average, not pitted, just hazy. perfect grill. Front bumper has a dent, but both are presentable. There's literally an inch of dust/ dirt and mouse crap all over this beast!

So then I wanted to look at the VIN tag on the door, opened it and she's missing. Asked him, he says he has the title & original window sticker in the house! He bought it from his friend- who bought it new. Hopefully he has the tag somewhere. The license plate tags were 1976! The odometer showed 68000 (must be original).

So ,what's the story kids?? What is this thing worth, honestly. He didn't want an offer tonight until I can see it better & he finds the documents. If I do get it, I'll get it running and go through it completely. I have restored plenty Mopars, and this one needs about a solid 6 months to bring it to the road between doing the engine, suspension and all other systems.

Not really interested in selling it or parting it. Hell- it's a rare boat. I'll keep working on the pics here. Chat away!

Well... I honestly think that it is worth: How much you want it, how much work it will take to get it to where you want it, and how much the owner will let it go for. I, personally, if I really wanted it, would pay him what he wants for it. If I had to throw out a number... maybe $14,000? Can't wait for pics!

I'll hold my tongue till I see some pics but I'm excited for you.

camera is not cooperating tonight fellas. I'll have to take the SD card out and try putting them on a cd.

Any thoughts on the tag w/ the 99 engine?

When I sent my info out years ago for my 383 car I received a breakdown of the data plate. AB was 99 and the way it was listed was AB=99=Special Order V8 (Code 62=315 hp, 383 V8). Now I do not claim to be an expert but to me that means a 383 car. Unless the window sticker says otherwise. Curious as to why the VIN is missing. The motor that you are describing sounds very much like it is a 426. You will need to check the ID pad on the block. But the question is......was it born with that motor or did an engine swap happen somewhere along the line? I will try to post a pic of my data plate breakdown.

Lets see if this works. ab.jpg

Special order cars were a 91 code. Wonder why a 383 car would have a 99, not 62. Did the 383's have chrome valve covers? My 65 fury didn't, just turquoise. I can't wait to get under this thing to see the castings- not to mention if he pulls out the window sticker. Then it's game on. Regardless, I think it's a cool car with plenty of potential.

Why would a 383-4 be an AB99 Special Order?

Not 100% sure but as you can see that is what mine was and you can see where that translates to Code 62 which is a 383. My 383 car is originally from California and has the emissions package so that may be the reason? I have seen several Code 99's and they have all been 383's.

The 99 only refers to the engine not the car. Read the breakdown on mine ....he states that Code 99 = Code 62. There well may be a 426 residing between the wheel wells right now, but unless the window sticker says otherwise it may just be a 383 car (engine transplant at some time). And if the window sticker has a VIN who knows if it is for that car if the VIN tag is missing?

Is the car from the Jefferson plant?

99 simply means 'Standard engine' or whatever was standard for that particular model. (unless, of course, a '65 Imperial or Chrysler came standard with a 426 SW)
The engine code for a 426 SW is 80

So more than likely this is a 383 car (with 4 barrel) as this was standard engine for a '65 Monaco, if I am to assume?
