First off no disrespect meant for the family involved in this accident. It was only a matter of time before this kind of accident happened. A Tesla SUV on autopilot drove into a concrete lane divider. The car companies can’t even get there GPS’s to work properly in the cars they have now , how can cars drive them selves. I smell some massive Lawsuits in the future. I firmly believe the driver should drive the car , not the car drive the driver. We are just training a lot of drivers on how to not drive a car , this to me seems so backwards.

I am with you also on this. As a lot of the members here know, I drive for Uber part time. As one of the top drivers in the Chicago zone we had a big meeting last week and ALL the drivers complained about this practice. Under the current practice, Uber takes 25% of the charge and pays the driver 75%. This covers the drivers cost of using their own vehicle and insurance. They are looking for a way to put ALL that money in their pocket. In the Chicago downtown area there are many streets that have a Upper, and Lower address and the GPS cannot separate the two. Many of the streets on the upper end DO NOT cross over to the lower on the other side. Like you said, many are going to have to get hurt before this goes away.

This isn't the first if I recall. The first one was that Tesla fanboi a couple of years ago. Died watching a movie while the car was on auto pilot.

From 2016;
Tesla driver killed in crash with Autopilot active, NHTSA investigating

Autopilot is going to be the norm.....in the future. This version probably isn't error free quite yet. Just like going from Lean Burn to the current system.

Wow I didn’t know that , I stand corrected. It seems to me there’s a pattern forming here. Self driving cars are allowing people to Play on their phones even more than they are now instead of watching the road.

I'd like someone to explain what happens when 4 self driving cars get to a 4 way stop at the same time. Besides, if i am going to go into a self driving car why not just take the bus? Is insurance going to be cheaper with less (supposedly) crashes? How is the govt going to make up for the loss of revenue on traffic tickets? Who is considered at fault when 2 self driving cars crash? So the owner of the one considered at fault has to pay when the car screws up? How do the police get a statement on what occurred from a self driving car? There are so many unresolved issues here.

I will never ride in one.....I love driving, it is somewhat of a hobby for me even though it is part of normal life.

Am I wrong in thinking that if you’re not watching the road you’re going to get into an accident. Auto pilot or no auto pilot

I predict that in a few years that Every new vehicle built will have a camera facing the driver so the car companies and Insurance companies will be able to watch what you were doing when you had an accident. I Believe they’re already in tesla cars. Then all the self driving car companies can wash their hands of any responsibilities if the driver was not paying attention. What a can of worms we have opened with this.

But Mark the buses still have a driver at this point in time.

I kind of agree with you on this Bill. However I believe their bigger picture is to keep a car working 24/7 and available any hour. Big trucks driving themselves makes even less sense. Especially when the train does the same job, off the highway. These new electronic log book requirements will be the only up side for the large trucking companies the truck will not have to play by 14/10 rules. Does not make it a good argument

They are already mining the data from the car's onboard systems after a crash.

Just recently, three college kids were killed by a drunk driver near here. The cops know the exact speed, via the "black box", of the driver and now he's charged with second degree murder. Not vehicular homicide... murder.

From strip club to 86 mph before fatal OCC crash: Why driver faces rare murder charge

Now... Yeah, this guy deserves anything he gets... But it shows that "Big Brother" is watching you.

If you're in an accident where there is a fatality, immediately prevent anyone from seizing your data logger. Including LEO. And it's not the computer. It's the data logger. Two different things. And get your lawer to sieze any other car's.

Stan, they get a search warrant in order to seize the data. They can have a hold put on the car at the tow yard so you cannot get in it until after they have served the warrant and downloaded it. The data held on these things is staggering. Yet another reason to drive an old car!

We discussed this at length when I haunted the Vette forum. A lot of lawyers there. Lmao!! Anyway, the discussion eventually lead to on how to fry the data logger immediately after an accident by carrying a custom made pigtail in the car.

These types of cases are always how Big Brother is accepted by the masses.

The car insurance OB2 plug in module is the one that gets me... I'm waiting for that to be mandatory to get car insurance.

It's a matter of time before it's mandatory for all newborns to have an RFID chip implanted and a barcode tattooed on their wrist.

MADD is pushing for all cars made to have ignition interlocks in them so every time you get in the car you would have to blow into it to prove you aren't under the influence.....of course, it wouldn't stop those high on drugs from driving.

You know... I've had more friends killed by drunk drivers than I care to think about... In fact, just last month I lost a long time friend to his own drunk driving.... But WTF, it's more big brother making you prove that you aren't guilty of a crime. I have no problem with that being a requirement in someone that has been proven guilty of DWI, but someone like me, who can count the number of drinks he's had in the last year on one hand... That crap doesn't fly.

Wow, Big John. I totally agree with you on this one. I hope the driver in the story spends the rest of his life in jail over this. Too many people today are not being held responsible for their actions, or being let off on lesser charges. They sorry fact is the families of these innocent people who were killed will have to deal with that loss forever, and trust me the pain never goes away.
