It finally happened A Tesla car that crashed and killed the driver was running on Autopilot

The basic problem I see with self driving cars; they lack intuition and the ability to develop experience. A brand new human driver has to be able to recite the rules of the road and show they understand the rudiments of how to steer, brake, park. More advanced operations such as merging, night driving and bad weather driving they are expected to "pick up" as they gain experience. Sadly many never master these "advanced" operations.

I have driven for about 60 years and learned all of those skills and along the way have developed the ability to "read" the road to anticipate situations before they happen. I call this gut feel, but its really knowledge accumulated from my own mistakes and/or the mistakes of others. I think you all know what I'm trying to describe. Anyway, the difference between a safe driver and the disaster on wheels driver, is the good driver's ability to pay attention while driving and to develop a gut feel. Unfortunately many drivers fail to reach this plateau!

I have been involved with the design and programming of various computer systems since the mid 60's and have watched and experienced many unbelievable computer and programming advances. However, I've also seen many total disasters which do eventually get ironed out, Microsoft's "plug'n play" being a great example. A fairly simple concept that took nearly 20 years to become "mostly" reliable. I suggest so called "smart cars" are a long way from being able to develop "gut feel", first they need to learn how to follow a road without running into concrete lane
dividers.

Final thoughts, if gut experience is a side effect of experience, will the older model smart cars always be smarter than the new ones? Will the new ones need to attend "school" like our children? Will car school have 12 grades and then college degrees covering special cases like gravel roads, ice roads, mountain roads and bush trails? What happens if the batteries run out, does the highly trained smart car reboot to factory specs and have to restart in kindergarten?

Fortunately for me, I'll probably not live long enough to have to experience any of this, but I do worry for my grand-children.

It's the ability to read other drivers. You know the one, the lady in the right lane up ahead about 5 cars just tooling along, and you see that head start looking left from time to time but no other indications otherwise. Then just as you're going to pass they hit that turn signal, maybe, and merge into your lane. you knew it was coming because you subconsciously saw that tell. It's that subtle read that the computers aren't going to pick up on.

We discussed this at length when I haunted the Vette forum. A lot of lawyers there. Lmao!! Anyway, the discussion eventually lead to on how to fry the data logger immediately after an accident by carrying a custom made pigtail in the car.
Someone out there will sell something to fry the logger if your airbag goes off, to destroy any evidence if you are at fault.

I got a "free" hum and a discounted phone if I agree to sign up for the hum. Once I really looked at the hum I changed my mind quickly. Talk about big brother. Now if I had a teenager and put it on their car I might feel differently, since I would be big brother.

First off no disrespect meant for the family involved in this accident. It was only a matter of time before this kind of accident happened. A Tesla SUV on autopilot drove into a concrete lane divider. The car companies can’t even get there GPS’s to work properly in the cars they have now , how can cars drive them selves. I smell some massive Lawsuits in the future. I firmly believe the driver should drive the car , not the car drive the driver. We are just training a lot of drivers on how to not drive a car , this to me seems so backwards.
You can't even imagine the number of test pilots for planes that gave their lives to get to where we are today. It's all part of progress.

Except they still don't fly fully automated yet. Even though they've been able to do so since what they 80s? Planes have the ability to take off and land on their own but it's still pilot that do it.

There's a huge difference between someone who signed up willingly for the mission to test, and those that didn't.

I'd like someone to explain what happens when 4 self driving cars get to a 4 way stop at the same time.
There won't be 4 way stops. The speed of all four cars will be adjusted slightly so all can continue without stopping.

If I recall correctly, these systems are intended to assist the driver, drivers still need to pay attention.

I recall reading years ago of an RV driver who set their cruise control and went to make a coffee believing their vehicle was driving itself. Needl5to say it crashed.

Going to need better than 5 meter GPS for that.
No doubt. Although I don't think GPS is relied on completely for lane navigation and that sort of thing. There is an array of sensors that detect lines, lanes, other cars, etc. I don't really like this either, but it's coming, unless we have an economic meltdown or you get a "right to drive" amendment in your state constitution.

Now that’s a scary thought. One false sensor reading and you wil have a 20 car pile up in 10 seconds. How will this work in the winter on ice or snow. The cars they have now all crashed in the summer.

Tesla motors was already on life support because of financial mismanagement. They lose money on every vehicle they sell. Markets had started to notice this before this latest crash. Bond price and stock price have both tanked. To stay in existence Tesla will have to borrow something in the neighborhood of $1.5 billion later this year and it will all have to be borrowed at high "Junk Bond" rates. Going to be very expensive. Some financial writers are now projecting Tesla's demise by year end.

I actually just heard that on the radio an hour ago.

Ponzi scheme.

. I don't really like this either, but it's coming
Which is why I'm glad I live in farmland, won't be happening any time soon here. I'll be able to drive my cars as long as they keep bringing oil up but I'd the ground.

I grew up driving distracted with 4-5 things keeping me busy while driving, radio, two-way radio, cigarette, pop/coffee, hamburger, etc. Never had an accident, never caused anyone to have an accident, learned all kinds if evasive manuevers (that are instinctual now) and learned all about other drivers tells and how to read driving styles. I love to drive a car or truck, I can be in my own little world for a few minutes, if I want to. There are times I'd love to sleep and have Kitt take over for me, but I'll perservere and keep driving myself, thankfully.

Elon Musk is a wiz at getting govt to fund him as he gets his net worth into the tens of billions. He also has that Solar City company, they are the biggest ripoff going. They install the system, charge you more $$ than the power company on energy they soak up from the sun and get a tax write-off b/c it is a 'green' company.

Corporate welfare baby..........

Actually they are already supposed to be "smarter" or more skilled anyway, than a human. That is what is especially disturbing about the self-driving car that hit the woman pushing her bike across the road. With the sensors it has it should have been able to "see" her in the dark long before a human could have. Yet it never slowed down or veered to the left even when she was visible to the human eye.

I have no problem with that being a requirement in someone that has been proven guilty of DWI, but someone like me, who can count the number of drinks he's had in the last year on one hand... That crap doesn't fly.
For me it's a lifetime. I just don't like the stuff. Have a beer if you like, but please be responsible.

Yikes, that's scarry.

This is as bad as an old neighbor that thought his Harley should stay standing at a stop light. He didn;t put his feet down, whoops.

Where is that from. My poor wife wouldn't ever get across that intersection.

Here is the "driver" of the autonomous Uber car... The one that killed the pedestrian.

On her smartphone catching up on Facebook.
Only a moron would believe this is workable.
Politicians are getting bought off big time.
