there supposed to be 1 or 2 piston retainers? Also, how is the rubber boot supposed to be properly installed?

If anyone has any pictures as an example that’s be great. Thanks!
 
Looks like the retaining clip that holds in the piston is missing. It sits inside the bore. I've never seen a tab like that with a screw. The boot usually fits over a protruding nub in the casting, but I can't recall....
 
You are missing the retainer. Looks like this.

The small retainer under one screw will need to be removed. The small retainer is used with power brakes and the larger one with the boot in my pic is for manual brakes.

Wow, who knew. Someone must have replaced it before and never put it back on. I’ll have to try and source one.
 
I ended up getting the retainer off eBay. Here’s the finished product. I feel better now.
