@commando1 I don't blame you for wanting to ignore this thread, but FWIW, I'd be interested in what you have to say.
For me, last weekend what began as an overdue visit with my dad, and to spend time with him, is all I wanted to do. But when I woke up Sunday morning and saw what was happening in Dayton really made me stop and think, (philosophically) WTF is happening today that has made society so hateful, and why are these occurrence's happening all the time.
The media sensationalizes this crap so much, they're probably salivating for the next mass shooting, where ever it happens.
Young people today (not all) have too many distractions that keep them engrossed on their cell phones for the latest news, or whatever, and not enough time thinking for themselves.
The jobs young adults find today, typically do not last more than 5 years. That would drive me crazy, but it's what the technology jobs have to offer. Any person in their 50's today will have some recollection of the plentiful, well paying jobs that were in every decent size city throughout America, and as others here have mentioned, held a good paying manufacturing job during that time. If lucky, you kept that job until you retired with a nice retirement package or pension. Not so much today, as many large employers don't do a whole hell of a lot for their employees.
In Dayton, the guys that were hit the hardest when the Big 3 in Detroit decided to either scale down production or move operations to another country, were the working class families. I had friends who's parents were laid off back then, and to this day, some have never recovered.
I think it's a joke when politian's go into a community, standing on their stump to tell the audience the future for good paying jobs will be "Green Jobs". To that, I ask what future? Robots that have already replaced the human in many different sectors in manufacturing. Pretty much closes that field out. Autonomous trucking is being developed, and will someday kill a whole new industry of good paying jobs. More and more unskilled jobs, like those of sort that we see people demanding $15/hr for counter help/cashiers or even flipping a burger, will soon be gone too. Kiosks are in more & more fast food restaurants now than ever before.
The green jobs will require very few people, highly skilled & highly educated people, most will probably require an engineering degree, or other highly skilled training.
Even now some of these big companies are closing their doors because of advancements in technology, eliminating thousand of jobs. We can than tech giants like Amazon, Facebook and Google for that.
Back in the late 70's/early 80's when those manufacturing jobs were disappearing, it snowballed to an "ideal" way for big business to move off shore or over the border, to pay a significantly lower wage for their products.
We as a country should have passed laws back then, to not make it so advantageous for these corporations to leave.
When the 1990's came, and NAFTA was signed, it was the death nail in the coffin for any hope of revitalizing manufacturing in the states.
The younger generation will have it harder than we have in our lives. But as a 50 something, white male, I hope to make it to the finish line working in my field until the day I choose to retire, before my it is gone too.
