New buy 1971 Plymouth Fury Gran Coupe

Is rust around the rear window common? Yes, very common on these cars.

On a Mopar check the trans fluid level with the car in Neutral...instructions are printed on the dipstick.

:eek:ccasion14: .....................Nice, a small block C body. Some here dis approve, I like it!

Does anybody know a good website to find NOS or OEM parts for a 71 Fury. I am going to try to restore this one to original spec's with correct hoses, wires, and everything else a purest would do for a restoration.
Jon I really like your car and it sounds like you have the vision to complete it. Give Nigel at National Moparts a call. He picked up a lot of NOS parts several years ago.

Good looking C-Body !!! it's a great one to save that's for sure Welcome to the site ...... :3gears:

Thank you all, and thank you Fratzog for another website!

I have been looking for a coupe of manuals that pertain to the 1971 Fury models, was there a separate book for those or were they combined years like 1971-1972.

To give you two examples from ebay, : http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-Chrysl...anuals_Literature&hash=item5888411c6b&vxp=mtr

Also, I have a Gran Coupe 4 door model, I only see the sport fury, Fury I II III. Is my model a Fury III, can anybody tell me the diffrences between each, I want to be sure I get the right manual.

Thanks

Jon

First line of work to do

I did check out the car again this weekend and took a few pictures of the wheel that tilts inward, can any of you judge from the picture, what it is that is bad. Upper, lower, ball joint??????

I am far from an expert on these things any help would be great. After I get a new battery for the car I will be temporarily moving it for an underside inspection here in a few weeks.

I was thinking about getting a "Original performance standard front end kit from P-S-T" but I want to get as close to OEM as possible, I might as well do all four wheels if I have to do one of them.

Thanks for your help

Jon

Hi John, you will need to take the wheel off to take more pics. it does appear as if the upper ball joint has popped out the top? It doesn't look right at all, plus if you could take pics of the bolts holding the upper control arm to the chassis as well as a photo of the top of the arm, that will give us a good idea of whats going on, the lower ball joint is intact but we cant see whether it is worn on not. Cheers,
Gary

Your Fury is a Gran Coupe, which was a special edition Fury starting in 70. I feel that it was a means of replacing the VIP, but I have no proof of that. Here's another link that I think all C body fans should have in their favourites:

http://fuselage.de/

On page 9 there is a Gran Coupe in behind the Sport Furt GT, but the term Gran Coupe isn't mentioned.

As for the front tire issue, I see nothing bent in your pic...an inspection of wear items (bushings/ joints etc.) and an alignment should sort that out.

Then you could get the tires remounted with the white walls out too, like from the factory.

Think ya nailed it with the upper ball joints. Almost EVERY mopar I've ever owned had this issue at one time or another....A,B,C or E.

Jon, you need to locate a FACTORY SHOP MANUAL ....As published by Chrysler for use in the dealership service departments. It will cover most procedures for the entire Plymouth Fury car line. You'll find them offered on ebay.

The differences between te Fury I, II,& III
are primarilly just trim levels,

Another "almost manditory" item to obtain is a factory parts book for 71. Originals can be found but can be expensive. There are copys on CD's avaliable that are very conveniant to use.
The parts book will reveal part numbers and illustrations of almost every part for your car. Best to have one of these books to avoid buying "wrong" parts. The money you save on avoiding buying wrong parts will pay for the book.

To add to Wills parts book request, so you know the 71 parts book does a duet with the 70. It'll be a 70/71 parts book when you do locate one.

I think wollfen is right ball joint poped out of control arm, they thead in and a little bit of rust and or a gas station gorilla they are fairly easy to crossthread. If you can coax it back down into the controll arm with wieght off the wheels and get it seated again tack weld it in several spots to the control arm at least it will get you mobile.

Thank you all, thanks to a fellow forum member I was able to find a free online copy of the 1970/71 Chassis and Body manuals. I have already started reading the Chassis book, a lot of information to take in for sure.

I needed to move the Fury around to the other side of the garage last weekend. After realizing the battery in the car was dead and would not hold a charge, my car buddy let me borrow a brand new one to start the fury with. Once the battery was installed I went to turn it over to start, I got nothing, no crank or starter motor sound, the lights came on but no crank, the battery was as powerful as the other battery that was in the car, 600 cranking amps. My friend who has worked on all kinds of cars old and new thought it was a ballast resistor or something of the sort. I guess these models has such a thing.

Can anybody shed any light on this. I had one more question, the AC unit in the car, I don't think you can get Freon for it anymore can you? Is there a conversion kit or something that would allow me to use it down the road?

Thanks

Jon

The ballast resistor is related to the ignition system and the reference is mainly to electronic ignition quipped cars... '72 and newer. In your case, with a no crank situation, and a car thats been sitting, I would check the battery connections at both ends,(ground at the engine and the terminals on the starter its self). Then then the starter relay. Probably just a loose or dirty connection somewhere. Good luck

If everything else works but the starter won't actuate with the key, try crossing the stater relay terminals (relay is on firewall near pwr brake booster), see if it'll start that way.

Thanks for the ideas, I will try them here next weekend, I don't seem to have a lot of spare time due to work lately. I had another question for you all, this one does not have to do with the ignition system but the torsion quiet system that Chrysler used in 1971. I have not looked at my rubber bushing but they are most likely gone or dry-rotted. Does anybody know where I could find replacements?

Thanks

Jon

I am back from the dead, and still looking for parts of course.....

I messed around with the Fury several months ago and noticied the reason the car was not starting or turning over was because I had the trans in the Park position. As this makes no sense to me, I tried starting the car in neutral and she started right up. A friend of mine mentioned the transmission is out of line. I have only drove the car down the street once after this incident, the transmission shifted fine. The car has currently been in storage since last winter, when I started this thread, in my parents garage in OH. Next week the fury will be trailered down to my place in Northern KY. My next door neighbor parts out cars and restores the late 70's malabu's. He stated he would help me with the ball joint problem on the passenger side. This neigbor is fully equiped with all the tools nessesary to overhall a car if needed and he stated I could borrow as needed. I have recently moved to a house and now have a garage to keep this ship in and to work on the car this winter.

As of right now I am still looking for:

AC/Heater and radio dash bezel
Set of Dash Screws

Jon

Yup...that would.be my bet too. Mine recently malfunctioned also. Its a quick fix...if that is the problem...ditto that ball joint.
