New dog = daughter bit....:(

My sister had a similar but lesser experience when she was about 6 years old... leaned over to kiss the sleeping old dog which startled it... got put down because it bit her face twice and was still going as she withdrew...brother was 3 and they just couldn't have that.

On the other hand I was 9 and argued long and hard that they put my sister to sleep instead...

Prayer's and best wishes for her speedy recovery, the puppy sounds like a great idea. Do your breed research then make a decision but I have never seen a pure breed lab violent with it's family, but lab's can have hip problems

That was a scary ordeal - my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I am glad you had the needed training and composure to handle things perfectly. Somehow, as I think back on so many issues that come up with kids I have known in the past, there is someone watching out for them despite the traumas. That could have been a lot worse, but now, I am hoping for a speedy recovery as well. All the best.

I'm very glad that your daughter is OK. I wish her a speedy recovery.
Rottweilers make awesome pets if trained from a young age, while being exposed to anything that has potential to scare them in the future. We love ours!

Whiskey actually help raise our cat from the day it was born. (We found him on the sidewalk).

Man that's horrible what happened to your daughter. Thankfully you were calm and took over the situation. Wishing a speedy recovery for your daughter.

That dog almost resembles my father's dog which was a rescue from Tony La Rusa's organization. All black lab yet a super friendly dog that is so friendly and excitably happy she scares my 6 year old son.

Obviously the dog was a product of prior experience. Hopefully your daughter won't carry her experience with her like the dog apparently did. Best of wishes for her.

Thank you again everyone for the best wishes, prayers and positive thoughts.

My daughter is keeping a super positive attitude! She has said that once this whole ordeal is behind her that it will make a super cool story to tell her boyfriends! Also today she decided to make homemade chocolate chip cookies!

Unfortunately my wife is having a tougher time of it. She went to work today and saw a large dog and had a bit of a panic attack. Then once in the office she's been re-living the whole attack and crying or close to tears all day. Probably a bit of PTSD?

I'm sorry to hear about your situation with your daughter and your dog! Sometimes, with pound dogs and rescues, it really is a toss of the coin how that animal integrates with the family, especially if that animals' past is unknown or sketchy.

When I went to buy my first Hudson in 2000, we made a day of it and took the family to north Texas to pick it up. The seller had a large Boxer that was not a "people dog", so he kept it in the fenced backyard while we looked at the car and did business. We went inside the house, and for whatever reason, he let the dog IN! Almost immediately, the dog made a beeline for my younger son (six at the time) and bit him on the cheek. I grabbed the dog and tossed him out the back door, and kicked the **** out of him on the way out! The owner was upset at his dog, and I was very upset with him AND the dog! So, we all went to the ER, where my son got five stitches. Fortunately, I intercepted the dog before he could do any serious damage to my son.

Long story short, the seller paid for all of the ER time and trouble, plus his insurance paid out a decent sum, too. My son had some fear of large dogs for a very short time, and got over that pretty quickly. The seller gave that Boxer to his ex-wife...don't know what to infer from that. Anyway, he and I ended up being pretty good friends after that. And his wife ended up putting that Boxer down, in the end. It was not a good dog.

Your daughter sounds to be one tough kid, quick recovery for her!

Glad to see your daughter doing well, seems that during holiday times things happen more? Well I hope your daughter and wife both get past this experience and it doesn't have lasting affects.

So sorry to see your young daughter wounded like that. I try to tell people all the time to keep their faces away from mature dogs they did not raise. It is never a good idea and a lot of people find that out the hard way. I think she will be OK with dogs going forward. I was bit on the *** by a German Shepard as a kid on my paper route and dogs love me and I like them. You just can never take them for granted.

Very glad to hear your daughter has adjusted so well. I hope your wife has been able to make a little progress, but I don't think I would push her into trusting a new dog right away. Perhaps someday she will be comfortable with a puppy and maybe the protective instinct thing will mean you become cat people. I can't imagine how that must feel to see that and feel helpless to stop it. You were definitely the family protector.

Thank you again everyone for the kind words...my daughter is a bit embarrassed that I would share the events with my on-line friends....but she doesn't understand the community we have.

She is doing really well! Most of the swelling has come down in the last 2 days, starting to look like someone I recognize. ;) And we go see the plastic surgeon tomorrow to get the stitches out....darn young kids heal fast! :D She's just taking small doses of Ibuprofen and acetaminophen to keep the discomfort under control now.
