New to me 78 NYB on its way but please Don't tell my wife

Cool. Now you're the go to guy for Formal ATC II.
:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Oh noooooooo!
You've earned it! In your "spare time" you've hammered this ATC II system into submission in what a month or two? Stan hates it and doesn't want to ever touch one again, @cantflip never has enough time :poke:, and countless others here have lost part of their minds trying to figure it out. This thread has been the clearest, focused and most informed/informative one on the matter of ATC II. Should be a Sticky thread imo.

And seriously, how much free time do you have? I'd hate to see what you'd accomplish if you weren't busy!

Mark Twain version of my Blower Update:

I asks myself... “Javier, it was workin fine with the old heater valve.... do you spose that maybe there’s a vacuum leak at the thermal valve? Naw I says, cain’t be...

So I checks all the connections and nufin!

So I ran direct power to the blower and it worked. So then I checks the main switch for vacuum and.... nufin

So I checks the easiest thing last and...?

Well squirt me with perfume and call me Petunia....
Twas the thermal vacuum valve after all.

That there Valve on the heater valve was aleakin like the dickens round the edge. So I takes that there dang valve thingy off and a dab of sealant round the edge set her to straight and a workin jest fine.

Even made me a little there adapter out of that new fancy silicone vacuum hose to make sure that it didn’t leak at the connector neither. “

For today:

Checked and sorted the headlight switch... dash lights head lights and headlight doors working the way mother Mopar intended. which is to say... so so

Got the blower back ablowin

Checked ATC II and now fully functional from max A/C to heat, defrost hi and low, recirculating air too. All done for the air handler portion at least.

The hardest part is yet to come..... the evaporator and heater core replacement!

Getting the ATC II working today was just for practice as I now need to take it all apart only to put it together all over again... hopefully working the same.

Ahhhhhhh!

Life is good!

Wait til I take it completely apart and put it all back together with pictures.

Maybe I’ll just start a separate thread on the ATC II 74-78. That would make it more findable to others in the future.

Btw..... shhhhhhhhh...... it’s all in the FSM. The poorest written book I’ve ever read.

If I ever get over to the coast I must buy you a beer.
F###. Another FCBO member on my Must-meet list, now. :p

Well... vintage auto air in Tampa had what I needed. Just ordered the evaporator and added in a new heater core. I figured better to be safe than sorry considering the sorry state of the radiator.

For those interested..... Evaporator was $248.38 with shipping. Heater core about $125.25. Shipped with the evaporator n.c.

Grand total.... $372.63 ouch!!!

Another 10 hours to pull change and replace.... priceless.
You have no idea.
Shh... don't tell Javier what he has to do to replace the fan... he's on a roll.

I agree compressed air is a meatball method, but if the system is empty and you've got no idea of how long and why it's empty, why waste freon? As for moisture in the system, an hour or so at a 30" vacuum should boil it out. Nitrogen would be nice but not everyone has it. Most people have a compressor of some sort available.
The method you mention, compressed air, is effective. It became company policy at pepoys somewhere in the 90's for us to have to test that way on R12 due to cost of refrigerant.

It was just one more thing that helped me increase my hate for that company ...

Why not do it the right way and vac it down and see if it holds a vacuum???

Bob..... I started by vacuum testing the system as a first check before I tried to put Freon in it. It appeared to hold vacuum with only the slightest bit of loss which I thought was from the fittings on my very old test gauges. It went from 28” to 22” of vacuum which wasn’t a big deal. When I first put in a can of Freon, the system sucked it down fast. This lead me to continue to think it was all good. Then, all the crap in the system collected in the drier and that was all she wrote. The compressor was also a little light on the suction so I popped for a new one, a new drier and expansion valve. I again put the system into vacuum as a test.....with the same result.... figuring I was good to go. Because this time the system was cooling to the point I was getting ice on the suction line out of the evap. Four or five days later, I found no gas in the system. I found a tiny leak in the evaporator.

Believe me that I will put the repaired system into full vacuum before I even close up the dash...

Stay tuned.

I would take a look at the fitting and replace it if you think its leaking. I pull 30" of vacuum and make sure i don't lose any vacuum for an hour. Anything less is unacceptable to me. I've had the same Freon charge in my system for 7 years now and I still get 38° at the center vent.

I was talking with Stan and I'm considering the Sanden conversion maybe when I replace the engine.
