Newby 1970 Dodge Polara Convertible

WHOO Great forum, Thanks for all your thoughts, Hope I can answer you all. Bought the car in 1984 from a guy that was having lunch same place as me, come out of the diner and he is cussing up a storm, Some dude just took a B Ball bat to it and broke out all the windows except windshield. Says I'm selling this F******* thing, I ask how much, he says $600, I said I'll be back in 5 minutes with the money, got the car. It was in rough shape, started fixing it up, my 1 year old lab decided to chew the new top off of it one night. I parked it threw a tarp on it, and added a trap very year for 17 more. Friend comes to me with a collector book that says maybe worth as much as 60K? Anyone know what there worth? Any way I think maybe I should get on to restoring it, started in 2006. Took about a year and a half, total resto, almost all NOS Parts. Sourced from all over the US and Canada, EBAY was a good tool. Did most of the work with a friend and I, except the engine, trans, paint and interior.
Had a local engine builder build the motor mostly stock, I get 3 years and 2500 miles out of it and it throws a rod. He says nothing I can do, so it sat for a while. 2013 I build a new motor myself, decided to through some horsepower to motor. It came stock with the 375 HP 440, Machinist thinks it is around 525 HP now. I live in the foothills about 40 miles east of Sacramento, so does the car. It came stock with all that it is on it, and it does have the smog tube in the trunk. No AC or Power door locks but that is all it's missing. Odometer says 36671 on it, probably a 100K more. Does any one know how many of these are left? I heard a few years ago about 23 is all that are known to exist.

Six hundred? Wow..... I t really took you five minutes to come back with the cash? That long huh? It looks like you did a real good job and I'm glad to see you kept the original colors.

The T code 440 is the standard 440 fare for the Polara at 350 horse. The U code would be the 375 horse and to date I haven't located any in the Polara convertible. The books don't show any of them being built either.

There was a 440 car in Ohio with 31000 miles, in great original condition that was asking 60 grand. After a few years and a move to the southwest he lowered the price to a more pallet able 24,900.
 
Was it the original engine that threw a rod? Was the engine savable or is there a replacement block in it now?

Dave, why don't you tell the man how many were built and how many you've located.

Dave I do not have a build sheet, wish I did. What are FK5 and RB cars? Where do I find a resource on how to read the tag?
VIN# search on hagerty.com comes up with 375HP 440?

Google fender tag decoding mopar and you will have what you need.

FK5 is the paint code.... 1970 is burnt orange, a personal favorite.

RB would be the raised block big block in 1970 is the 440.

Give me a few hours and I will spill my 70 polara convertible guts for you.

You aren't thinking of selling I hope. I can't buy another

I have a question that I need answered and hopefully the numbers guys will get in here... Where are the Y codes? I have noticed some have Y codes and some do not....WHY?


Here is what else I can tell you that you may or may not know.

The generally accepted number of 1970 convertibles built is 842 ... 79 were built with a 440....It is said that 45 of the roughly 695 built for the US cars were painted burnt orange, FK5..... 164 of those 695 had bucket seats

over the last 35 years I have located over 100 cars, many beyond repair but they still keep creeping out of the "woodwork" at a rate these days of about three a year. Yours has been added to the list and of course, I am envious of yours
 
I'm guessing LOX9 is actually L6X9.
I don't think there should be Y codes on a tag, just the sheet. My understanding is the tag had more to do with options that actually affected the assembly of the car and Y codes did not.
 
No, Y codes are on some and not others but I cant figure it out. Same plant, even same body line. Y05, Y14, Y16, Y93 ... I have tags with these Y codes and some with none at all
