OK you truckers...

That's the part of the job tractor-trailer school doesnt even touch on.
Apparently... Although he said they were pretty good with other advice for new truck drivers. He's got some common sense and the company gave him a few weeks with an experienced driver. He's run into a few things and had to learn when to "push back" on the company, but he's doing OK.

This is definitely got him a little shaken though.

Can't do too much when they hit you from behind... I would think that one is pretty clear cut. I suppose being in a semi, the other side will lawyer up at some point and start into how it's his fault. My sympathies to him John, that's not something I would wish on anyone to have to see... let alone be involved in.

Having spent the last 5 days driving around Denver in an underpowered Kia Sedona has given me a new appreciation of Darwin's Natural Selection. Some no make that many of these drivers need to have their cars impounded for the idiotic manouvers they were attempting. Sorry that your Son had to experience such an event so early in his career but it won't likely be the last time unfortunately

Idle thought.

there's lotta road construction around my part of town. So lotta cueing up at lights/sitting in traffic near the construction zones.

Past two weeks I have noticed ONE thing about TWO basic kinds of trucks - Single/Tandem bucket dump trucks and regular Class 8 trucks and trailers I see all the time - making left/right turns from a standing start.

From the start of the turn, to completion 90 degrees later -- 5 or 6 gear shifts. max speed at turn completion .. maybe 20 mph?. 2-3 gear shifts just to get moving. No uphill grades -- just regular level paved city streets.

The dumpers were loaded with grade stones or broken-up pavement. I can only assume the trailers behind the Class 8 trucks were full of something heavy as well.

Does that make sense or am i hearing things that aren't happening? Six gear shifts to go two or three truck lengths and at most 15-20 mph? And all the while the driver is making the turn with presumably one hand on the wheel -- the other shifting gears?

No, this doesn't make sense but 90% of the drivers can't drive firshit now anyway so gawd knows wtf they are doing up in the cab.
Also, most new fleet trucks have automatic trannies now which dumbs down the job even more.

I think I saw Werner driver playing Pokémon Go this morning...

They may be auto shifts so yes because ECU is doing this as soon as engine hits 16-1700 rpm even at not full throttle. You are also thinking about shifting, it isn't something that you think about just like lane positioning. You guys in Michigan with 159,000 gross weights are probably starting in deep reduction of a 15 SPD so that's 5 gears by 15-20 mph.

I'm trying to understand this one .. as always, I am NOT dissin' it. Just can't find any other info on it. Is this a "rat rod"?

Somebody worked hard on it I think and I do kinda like it .. in a Max Max Fury Road kinda way.

They should have put a Mercury sleeper or something more period correct(read little, short, coffin bunk) on it

couple more oldies from our neighbors to the North .. ..then i'm off the Mercury sleepers. :)

Gawdamm this was pure agony watching this. :BangHead:

that was interesting. im not a driver and never have been but my FIRST thought was the Seatlle guy was NOT far enough to the LEFT (Driver side) on his first approach.

only truck stops i am familiar with/paid attention to are these, which appear to be made for nose-first only parking/egress;

Ohio Turnpike West, Blue Heron Rest Stop, first one West of 280 Junction

The vid below is one I stumbled on to see how parallel parking was done .. my first thought 12 ft wide and 15ft length beyond truck total length was NOT going to work. :)

The real issue is that there wasn't enough room to make the swing in the first place and he was an idiot attempting it. He didn't have enough experience to know when something can't be done.

Regardless of his even sliding the tandens forward or back, the geometry just wasn't there.
Had he backed down the row, he would have had enough room to make the swing into the hole next to the green truck.

the vid went on to say he had two "spotters" and finally made it .. but it ended with him driving off apparently not making it.

the geometry does appear (neat tool btw) to indicate he wasn't gonna make it .. just leads me the puzzle about WHO got out of there and made the spot in the first place -- assuming they drove out forward/had a shorter rig??
